Op KNEW that she loved her ex, and why she left her ex. This shouldn't be a surprise to him. What she said was true, IF her ex hadn't gotten addicted, they'd still be together. Her ex chose drugs over her, so she chose OP over her ex. OP needs to grow up. If her ex ever goes clean and wants her back, then there will be a problem.

It heavily depends on if she would leave OP if the ex turned up sober and clean.
But her reaction is really bad

Had the ex chosen her over drug then no one knows if they would have stayed together forever and gotten married.

Or if a couple of years later they would have broken up over something else.
But the relationship she had is idolized and that's cruel and unfair to OP.
Because that makes him a backup/second option.

I hope OP gets couples counseling because after its they need it badly

She still loves him and has love for him but she is not in love with him. Those are two totally different things. She saw what he could be and I think that even though what she said was very hurtful to hear, I think she meant it as she looks back on that time. I had an ex that I had to leave because he was dealing with a lot of things and taking it out on me verbally. He passed away from taking his own life. I'll always love him and randomly I will catch myself thinking about a alternate future, the what ifs... but I am no longer in love with him. And I think we do that because those memories are frozen in time for us. She's not evil but I hope they can heal. It's not easy to lose someone to addiction and worse... it's surreal and there's no closure.
