Jordan has said this movie has to do with spectacle. They never try to kill the monster, they try to take a picture of it. The TMZ biker begs for his camera facing death. A chimpanzee massacres actors in an empty tv studio. To me, nope is about our obsession with entertainment, with capturing a moment that feels like the biggest threat to humanity, and quickly forgetting, moving on to the next cultural ‘UFO.’

i also like how the theme of a ‘bad miracle’ relates back to jupe. he was miraculously not hurt by gordy (many theory’s for why he was spared), which was a miracle. however, the miracle became a curse when instead of dealing with his trauma, jupe decided to commercialize it instead (joking about the snl skit about gordys rampage, building a room dedicated to gordys home and charging people to see it and spend the night in it), until he eventually he decides to try and ‘tame’ another wild animal, believing that because gordy spared him, he could also tame jean jacket (as it was later dubbed by OJ). but instead his hubris led to the deaths of about 40 people, all because of the miracle that happened to him as a child.

The digestion scene half way through the movie made me the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a theater. I did not expect it at all. Also, loved how the film tackled the themes of animal exploitation.

Nope definitely has some of the best “title drops” in a movie ever. Legit every time OJ said “nope” it fucking hit

What I really got from Nope was a commentary on the monetization of tragedy. From *SPOILER* the main characters trying to capture video of the thing that killed their father to sell to Steven Yeun's character selling admission to see tokens from a deeply traumatic moment of his past. It really reminded me of things like the true crime fans selling merch on etsy with serial killers faces on it. It was ana amazing movie and I'm so ready to go see it again

I loved the Akira slide towards the end in theaters. What a homage.

Anyone else think it's really cool how Yeun's character called the aliens "the Viewers, " and the little doll and costume aliens look exactly like the Panavision reels on the Gordy set?

I just realized at 5:25 the Jupiter aliens seem to be modeled after the sitcom cameras that were abandoned after the attack…i would say it’s a coincidence but based on how he held on to the traumatic images of that day and repurposed them for profit and It just makes too much sense

i am so happy Keke Palmer is finally getting her flowers. She has been giving us get acting since she was young, hosted shows, and she works hard.

I didn't find this movie to be particularly scary except for the Gordy scene oh my god I could not breathe it felt like an actual nightmare

I think the main theme of animal entertainment is interesting. The film touched on how people owning dangerous animals as "play things" is interesting. The same way the monkey is deprived of its natural habitat and loses it is similar to how the alien is used to entertain people until it too, loses it and devours 40-ish people. Both beings are unpredictable predators that should not be used by humans as stage pets. They cannot be controlled no matter how many times they appear to be domesticated. They are wild creatures that should not be used in entertainment spaces. As the TV-show rampage shows, they are still primal and do not want to be entertainment fodder for humans to enjoy

Loved the alien, honestly. It wasn’t scary but just — a “spectacle” lol. It was simply eerie, disturbing, and well executed.

I genuinely liked NOPE for what it was. I could definitely see how you could get lost in the multiple plots, but if you take it for what it is you’ll enjoy it. The movie left me thinking about it for a couple days after viewing.

With everything Peele delivered, one thing is for certain, he knows how to make me want an ICEE.

Commodification/capitalizing off grief and brutality & lack of respect or provoking (wild) animals for entertainment were themes I was not expecting going in but the way it was done was so well. I also like the CREW mention and the ridiculous extent people will go through to get the perfect shot even when they’re in the midst of danger.

I've been thinking about this since I walked out of the theater. For me, I didn't feel "terrified" or "horrified", but man does the bond between OJ and Em feel real. I went in knowing nothing and was thankful that I did. It definitely isn't an "alien" movie, but a spectacle in its own way. Can't wait to see it again and make even more connections.

It pays homage, in a way, to black cowboys, an occupation that has traditionally have been portrayed as white men, but historically they were predominantly black and Hispanic.

I personally love creature features and with these influx of conjuring type movies this feels like a breath of fresh air definitely a callback 50's and 60's Sci fi films

(Edit): I'd like it if people stopped having an aggressive little comment war in the replies, please. If you liked the movie thats amazing, if you didn't like it that's fine too, its a divisive movie.

I've been seeing so many people criticizing the Gordy scene in the sitcom set, and spoilers, I think it was absolutely necessary for a lot of different reasons, aside from just being a scary scene. Not only did it explain why the Jupiter's Claim manager thought he could "trust" the alien, but it was also a direct correlation and foreshadowing to the whole story. The Alien and Chimp were both animals being "trained" for our entertainment, and both of them got pushed too far and snapped. Both of them then get killed with a "pop" after retaliating as well. (Also, both the alien and the chimp killed if you looked them in the eyes, hence the boy not being killed because the tablecloth covered up the monkeys eyes)

Before looking it up I could just feel this film originally had a crazy long cut, and Peele confirmed that the first cut was 4 hours. I desperately want a directors cut. Maybe not a four hour version, but 3??? I mean I can just feel that Barbie Ferreira and Steven Yeun had more stuff originally. And the only complaint I have is the pacing of Act Three feeling way slower, and I think because that was the most preserved part of the original. If 20-25 minutes of film was added in both of the previous acts this feeling would be eradicated. THAT is the epic I want.
