Nope: 16 Shocking Details You Missed

Jordan Peele has once again delivered a breathtaking horror movie, this time in the sci fi alien invasion tradition of the 50s, and paired it with a complex critique of modern society. The target this time around is the spectacle and the way it manipulates desire and commadatizes spectacle over lived experiences. But instead of being a weird long lecture like the Situtationalist documentary The Society of the Spectacle, it is itself a fun spectacle, like the Situationalist movie Can DIalectics Break Bricks. The story of the Haywood siblings OJ and Emerald and their search for the “Oprah shot” of the skyborn alien apex predator that has turned their ranch into its hunting grounds manages to be massive and personal at once. The combination of wide panoramic shots with a monster that commands the sky along with dramatic and intentional use of silence creates an unsettling masterpiece that uses its own spectacle to question our relationship to spectacle and how it is used to manipulate and shape society. All while having the easy charm and reliability of the characters in a Jordan Peele movie, no doubt a function of his comedy background. The result is both a fun two hours in the cinema watching the world’s angriest Roomba terrorize a souther California ranch and a thoughtful critique on our relationship with genuine experience and the allure of the spectacle and how that both creates the illusion of the American dream, the dream cameraman Antlers Holst warns in the movie is a dream you never wake up from. How would you rate this movie from 1 to 10?

quick correction on detail 12. I also thought, in my initial viewing, that the opening credit zoom was an above view of the hayward house. But after rewatching, I'm confident that the square we see is actually Jean Jacket's eye. *SPOILER* They show at the end when Jean Jacket (JJ) unfurls fully that the green square is its eye. Which makes it being the opening credit scene that much more chilling, because Peele is having his audience unwittingly stare the creature in the eye for over a minute, the very act that we learn later on in the film, is what instigates JJ

LOVE that shot when Jean Jacket almost crashes and has to emergency bug out then you see its skin rippling and you're that's not mechanical or a UFO".

Nope was a loving tribute/homage to classic Spielberg, in particular Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and especially Jaws. So many brilliant Spielbergesque qualities to this movie, from the characters and music to the cinematography and old Hollywood 1950’s style visual effects with the UFO. But it also reminded me of classic Alfred Hitchcock. The way that Jordan Pelle builds tension and suspense in this film( as well as all his films)and the suspense and buildup is better than the payoff, just like Hitchcock used to do. Even touches in the film reminded me of classic Rod Serling era Twilight Zone in the vastness and scale and scope of the environment and focus on a small number of characters in a mysterious unusual situation throughout

Wow, the 3 monkeys reference was a really great catch. Peele's company is also called Monkeypaw Productions.

Jordan Peele has achieved his goal. "Nope" has become a pop culture phenomenon. Enough said.

The helmet of the motorcyclist not only resembled the mirror ball that spooked the horse, but only had 1 eye hole on the left. Otis Sr was killed by a coin going thru his left eye.

Not gonna lie, didn't get it on the first watch. But the more you watch it, the more you see how ingenious it is!

I think that the shoe on its edge, along with all the coins in the film, is a call back to the classic Twilight Zone episode: " A Penny for Your Thoughts." in that episode the main character flips a coin, that impossibly lands on its edge, and because of this he can read thoughts. I could be wrong, but that's what it reminds me of.

I forgot about the balloon boy incident. That certainly was a spectacle

I've watched a bunch of these hidden details/eastereggs video, yet none of them (including this one) noticed that the old prospector behind Emerald during the photobomb scene was played by Keegan-Michael Key.

One correction: many sitcoms were shot on multiple film cameras in the 90s. I can name three right off the top of my head - _Friends, _ _Wings, _ and _Cheers._ this is how we are able to see them in high definition, even though they were made before high definition became a consumer technology.

i noticed something as well about the colour in NOPE- there's a reoccurring motif. green is pretty poignant in this film.
OJ fumbles in front of a big greenscreen and is saved by his sister named *Emerald*, who often wears green and is wearing pointedly bright green towards the end of the film. there's even a moment where she stares hard at one of the... flappy tube guys, i'm not sure what they're called- on the motorbike, waiting for Jean Jacket's anti-elecro field to move away- but it just so happens to also be green. Jean Jacket itself then unfurls a big green square around its eye/mouth as a warning flash- and they're *all* similar shades to the greenscreen at the beginning.

i think its also worth noting the bright orange X's dotting the greenscreen and also Lucky, and the fact that OJ wears a bright orange hoodie for the final standoff with Jean Jacket as he rides Lucky. i think the return of those colours together very neatly bookends the film and subtly highlights OJ's quiet growth as a character, as well as his natural strengths and weaknesses as a person. he was uncomfortable with timid body language in front of the greenscreen, but confident with strong, defensive body language facing down Jean Jacket's warning colour. another thing that runs alongside the colour motifs in these two scenes is that OJ's lack of eye contact with anyone on the movie set is framed as a weakness or a social failure, while not making eye contact with JJ was the single key factor in not getting sucked up into it and eaten. just something i found really interesting as someone who draws + has to think about colour a lot!

Holst’s The Planets is my favorite. I play the oboe and LOVE playing Jupiter. So awesome.

The movie starts about a moving picture of a black man on a horse.

The movie ends with a black man on a horse standing completely still.

I love how JJ is also very similar to the depiction of a seraph Angel mixed with a bit of the Throne angels with the eye motif. It’s so odd it’s horrifying in an intriguing way which a lot of real life predators use as a hunting technique with their wild colours which JJ again resembles with his weird green curtain eyelid? Whatever it is it’s cool.
