Yeah. The chimpanzee scene had me horrified more so because of how realistic it is. Reminded me of the real life story of Travis a chimp that ripped someone's face off.

The Gordy’s Birthday scene is a MASTERCLASS in implied horror. The fact that they don’t show all the gore makes that scene 1000x more frightening

the scariest parts of the movie for me personally were the gordy rampage scene, the scene of the kids in the alien costumes and that one scene of the alien digesting the crowd and when it rains their blood on the house

Jupe never learned even when being the only cast member spared. It's even more ironic that his remaining costar is there to witness another failed attempt at taming an animal acting on instinct, and is attacked/killed like she was by Gordy

I love Jupe's style of describing the SNL sketch version of the Gordy's Home incident, it was so showman like, and you can tell he's trying to emotionally distance himself from it while still trying to profit from the spectacle it created

I thought the vertical shoe was the “bad miracle” of the movie. Like during this horrific tragedy a single shoe was able to be perfectly balanced straight up after being thrown off by an attacked woman, which sounds like a miracle but not a good one lol

The genius of Jordan Peele is he doesn't tie everything in a neat bow. He lays out a map and lets the audience get to the destination. He is making films that M. Night should be making. NOPE is my favorite film of 2022.

The alien wasn’t very scary? How about the people being digested inside the alien and us getting a close up look seeing it happen, then hearing the people screaming inside it as they get squished into flesh and their blood gets vomited onto the Haywood’s house…. Pretty sure that was scarier man lol but yes I love the Gordy scenes as well

Spoiler! This movie is about fame and money and what people are willing to do for it, how far are they willing to go. It's about exploitation, and its about the ones being exploited and what happens when they are not given credit for their accomplishments, respect, and a voice, it's about the horrors that can happen when they pop like a balloon when it becomes to unbearable to continue being taken advantage of. It's about the predators who are on top of us, who take advantage and take the credit for each and every one of your moves, and you cant even look at them in the eyes, and its about standing up to those forces that are just monitoring our every move to control us. Its about winning. Winning the respect and the recognition for that winning shot at success and recognition. Finally their grandfather gets the recognition he deserves in Hollywood as the first man in a moving picture 🤝❤️

I think Jordan Peele meant for this scene to be a “double entendre” of sorts to the narrative and theme of Nope. At its core, it is about life and it’s separation from “spectacles”. Characters like Jupe, the audience of the Star Lasso experience, even the main characters view Jean Jacket as a spectacle to be captured and recorded, which detracts from their realization that it is an animal. It’s also interesting to note that at first glance, they view it as a “ship”, something mechanical and somewhat akin to their cameras. The characters in this movie, with the notable exception of OJ, are incredibly detached from life despite it surrounding them. OJ is the only one to detach from spectacle culture (ex: his flip phone) and realize what Jean Jacket is: a animal, with no ulterior motive.

I think everyone is missing the fact of why the monkey didn't kill Gordy. It's because he related to the young adopted boy. Like many sitcoms, like Different Strokes and Webster, the young adopted minority child in an awkward way becomes the "show animal/ monkey" for the wealthy middle class families. The families get to show off their adopted POC child, as their pet project. The monkey got tired of being the show monkey and flipped on his exploiters. I believe Jordan Peele was touching on this with some serious symbolism.

I believe specifically the Gordy scene is a Parallel to the "Alien" in that for the most part Gordy seemed tamed until he wasn't. We realise despite our best efforts that animals are animals and will act "out of the norm" without hesitation. We see this when Jupe is grown and it's revealed he has been following the "alien" and has been feeding it horses. All of a sudden it doesn't want the horse anymore and eats everyone at the stadium? That's the parallel between the two incidents and Jupe should have known better with what he experienced growing up. It could also be he didn't know better because he thought it was a ship with aliens in it as opposed to being any alien animal. If he had known he may have acted differently towards it.

I agree the monkey scene for me was so scary

Anyone notice that those 3 Panavision cameras at the 0:56 mark look like the alien heads that Jupe's 3 kids wear during their show?

It's not the mother, it's the daughter. The whole thing is set up really well; from the beginning we don't know who was attacked by the chimp and whether they lived or died. The scene with the sitcom footage had me on the edge of my seat looking at character's legs trying to spot who was in those jeans and slip on shoes we see right at the start of the film, and when I then saw the mother sitting on the sofa in a skirt, I realised it must be the daughter and was filled with anxiety waiting for Gordy to explode.

Having the daughter be the victim of the chimp really makes sense as a parallel to child stardom, because we're exposed to way more "trainwreck former child stars" who are female, such as Lindsay Lohan, or Amanda Byrnes. They are left mauled and disfigured by fame, just as the chimp mauled the girl star of Gordy's Home.

The chimp portrayed two key things:

1. Predators cannot be tamed
2. People are addicted to spectacle

June thought he had “tamed” the chimp by surviving the attack and then went on to profit from the story by telling people his own version (spectacle). He did the same thing with the UFO (predator), which is what lead to his death.

I agree with you 95%. I believe that June does remember Gordy’s attack but doesn’t want to talk about it (from his point of view at least)

This scene was scarry to me because I could see it happen. I know there are no aliens that will eat me or vomit human blood and accessories on my house( that scene got quite a few people I'm my theatre leaving our almost in a run to the bathroom) but a chump getting triggered into hurting people who do have some connection with him is scary because we can see ourselves in that situation. Not only because many people at one point would give anything to be an actor like Jupe but also because we all have some sort of connection to an animal, even if you don't own one yourself. Seeing this loved chimp kill those who care for him just gives me shivers.

Gordy also signed to the kid "What happened family?"

This was an excellent break down of that scene and the entire concept of the alien. It shocked me in theater only because it was sooo real that the fakeness of the scene happening really escapes your mind. The scene really proved that animals are still animals no matter the bond that can change in an instant and we should not treat them or put them in environments that they are cognitively unaware of with people they don’t have a bond with. The bond between Gordy and Jupiter is the only thing that kept him alive in that scene or the fact that the police arrived before he could attempt the “bump.”
