Skin tags, also known as acrochordon, are small, soft, benign neoplasms commonly found in obese individuals. They are often pedunculated, and appear as multiple lesions on the skin. The size varies from 2 to 5 mm, however, some skin tags can grow up to 5 cm rarely. Although they can occur at any site, most frequent locations are the neck and the axilla. Both males and females are affected equally.
The exact cause of skin tags is not known. Risk factors include obesity, aging, hormone imbalances, especially high estrogen, progesterone, and growth hormone levels, frequent rubbing of the skin, infection with human papilloma virus types 6 and 11, and type 2 diabetes.
Skin tags are often asymptomatic. However, they can become painful when inflamed or irritated. Occasionally individuals may have pruritis.
People with skin tags seek treatment when there is a cosmetic concern, or when the skin tags become symptomatic. Treatment options include, cryotherapy, where liquid nitrogen is applied to freeze the lesions. And surgical excision of the skin tags under local anesthesia.
