For beginners, the Anytone, or BTech are good, because you can use the digimon without knowing the color code, or talk group.

I totally agree with your selection and order, I tested both and I have the HD1 from 2018 its age of born, the radio today works like a charm. The Anytone have a lot of functions but the price is a big issue, finally by this reason for APRS I bought the FT3D near the same price, Yaesu have two hardware modems, and Anytone have one software modem for APRS. But, I found myself using more the HD1 in DPRS with MMDVM and Brandmeister Network, it works pretty fine for messaging and Global Position Report.

The HD1 its exactly like to work with an old Kenwood Hamradio, you may work perfectly im VFO mode, in FM and DMR, simple and pretty direct through simple menu options, you can create several Radio ID and use it, you don't need to create complex Rx List on the field like Motorola and many other Chinese radios, the Tx contact is good enough for working in a TG with no one complexity. The Tx contacts by the way its so easy for creating groups from the VFO.

In my opinion, none other DMR radio has left its commercial heritage, this could be the great issue for Hamradio operators totally adopt DMR, but with HD1 all this complex heritage has been drop in a really efficient manner, but with no loss of functions. Excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and manufacturing quality. This was made for a long life.

Why do you want a battery that is larger than the radio

So honestly do you think this would make a good first dmr before I decide if it’s for me and jump to the anytone?

My TYT MDUV380 failed right out of the box. I had to scrounge around the internet to find a Windows 11 driver so the radio would connect to the software.

Agree about the radios, disagree about the order, the Anytone is the superior HT on this list, but I don’t think you would be disappointed with any of them 😊
