It should be noted that DMR Tier 1, as described in this video, is *not legal* for unlicensed use in the United States. The 446 MHz band is allocated to amateur radio users, while the US equivalent to PMR446 is FRS, which is in the 462/467 MHz range.

Those tiers are related to technology systems, not to the the radio devices. If I have a handheld radio marked as tier 2 by manufacturer, can I operate it if my organization utilize Tier 3 (trunked) system? Surely Tier 2 device can use shared frequency as you describe for Tier 3.

Hi there. Just curious. Is that saying that, even in the States where 446mhz is ham territory, people can buy and use tier I DMR without a license?
I thought that would be either illegal or iffy.
