Ukraine War: Putin demands payment in roubles for Russian gas supplies

The Russian President has said, from tomorrow, countries buying gas from Russia must pay in roubles or their contracts will not be honoured.

In a televised statement Vladimir Putin said he had signed a decree to that effect, adding that the switch to roubles was designed to "strengthen our sovereignty".

The only thing that surprises me about this news is that Putin waited this long.

As much as I dislike the guy, he makes a hell of a lot of sense. We essentially blocked their economy almost entirely by imposing sanctions. Now, we expect them to accept Euros or Dollars which are virtually useless to them as most accounts will be frozen and unable to trade with the West so they would only accept rubles to trade internally. The irony of this is that sanctions have been portraited as a punishment for Russia whereas they will also take a massive toll on Western economies due to their reliance on Russian natural resources. Very dark times ahead.

Germany is opening a Ruble account in Gazprom Bank, they pay in Euro's and will be converted to Rubles.
In other words, Germany is buying Rubles. which leads to a stronger Rubles.

In the past, payment of the gas stays in European bank as Russian foreign Reserves, but it has been frozen. So if Russia accept it as foreign reserves and cant get the money.. its like giving free gas to whole Europe.
