As Russian troops were ordered into eastern Ukraine, Vladimir Putin set out what he wanted if the country was to be spared war.

The Russian President called for Crimea - annexed by Moscow in 2014 - to be recognised as part of Russia, a halt to weapons shipments to Ukraine and an end to Kyiv's bid to join NATO.

It is incredible in this time when most people have an education that will have included even a modest over view of world history that could only steer a leader with any common sense into a peaceful future, except that one megalomaniac can destroy any harmony that has already been fought for and negotiated over the past century. Vladimir Putin has sacrificed all of that in the interest of hanging onto a relic of history that was the USSR and in his efforts has also sacrificed the lives of thousands of people. VP has isolated Russia from the wider international community in a way that will take decades to repair. It is nonsense to assume the Russian public would support his war if they understood the truth about has fabricated justification for the invasion of Ukraine. We must hope that those with influence in Russia will eventually force a change and that the Russian people can eventually understand the truth.
