Thank you for helping me get a basic understanding. I’m a college student just finished paying off my car and got rear ended at a red light… first time dealing with all this

Keeping a vehicle deemed a total loss by an insurance company is usually a bad idea.
1. If you now have a salvage title, your vehicle is borderline worthless
2. If your vehicle has repairs, they will likely be more than the insurance settlement. Then you’re out of pocket
3. Most reputable companies won’t work on it. The ones that do are often shady. Example. Your car is worth 4000, you have estimated 3000 in damage. Insurance pays you 3000 as settlement and let’s you keep the car. When you bring for repairs, they take it apart, suddenly repairs now cost 5000, and you’re stuck with a shop holding your vehicle, in pieces, and you’ll be 2k out of pocket to get it back.

You forgot to mention to NEVER accept the first offer from the insurance company. If they feel your car is worth $5K, do your homework and collect examples of comparable vehicles selling for more in your area and present that data. If you are not at fault, the at fault driver's insurance company should pay what it costs to replace your vehicle with one of similar age, mileage, condition and options.

I haven't gotten an estimate yet, but I can guarantee that my insurance will total my car because it's a 2007 Mini Cooper so obviously repairs are expensive. I know they're going to say it's worth like $4, 500 but I know it's worth at least $5, 500. It has 4 brand new tires, new spark plugs, new ignition coil, recently recharged A/C refrigerant, new o2 sensor, and I pampered that little bastard. I changed it's oil every 3, 000 miles, checked the oil at least once every week, and I detailed it every 1-2 weeks. I've spend $1, 000 on maintenance/repairs and I've only had it for 5 months

A tree branch fell on my truck and the repair shop priced the repairs so high the insurance company declared it a total loss even though my truck runs fine and only had a few dents and a broken windshield. The shop claimed it needed a whole new top and other things but it doesn't. My husband can fix it himself, but thought the insurance company would do it since we paid for it every month. Our truck is paid off in full. I feel that they were trying to hijack my truck !!! So they take it, fix it up and make money from it !!! I knew there was some kind of game to these insurance companies !!!!

Why not just tell everyone what a F-ing rip-off the insurance companys are. "They" Total out your vehicle and say it's ONLY worth some little cheap ass amount (that They pull out of some wholesale/ car Dealer book) Meanwhile the market value to go out and actually buy another one just like you had is 4 times the amount they want to give you.
Good example.... 93 Dodge Cummins 4x4.
Insurance says 2500 bucks
The market says (if you can even find one) 12000 to 18000
IT'S BULL CRAP.

i work for an insurance company and i wish people would watch this video. so many time people insist on keeping the salvage car and then call me 2 weeks later because they changed their minds...too bad, call a salvage yard to come pick it up and now you've got a whole new set of problems

Remember when I was a kid a totaled car was unheard of.

Now more common than one being repaired. Seems fishy to me.

i thought paying for comprehensive insurance, meant that the insurance company agreed to pay damages to the car.. if they say its totalled from hail damage, dont they have to pay you what the value of the car is worth? i didnt agree to hand over my car to them, to get the money.. whats this crap about having to buy it back from them.. am i missing something, or is this just another case of insane world?

No matter how you maintained your car, insurance companies do not care. They just want your money.. Sucks, but it's true.

My car was crashed (all airbags went off) by a family member who was an excluded driver on my insurance. My insurance is not going to give me anything, so will my car ever be classified as totaled? This being the case, can I sell it as is with the original title?

No they just don't want to replace the door and it's a vehicle that hit the door that's doing it
