I started my IT consulting company in 1984 (an awesome year) for a little over $1K. Most of this was related to incorporating in my state, as my clients at the time would not take me seriously unless I were incorporated. If your client or clients don't care, I would avoid incorporation entirely as it dramatically simplifies everything and brings startup costs closer to $0. Most important thing is to have client 1.

You still need to build an Entity... just can't go naming your business, domain and company without doing your due diligence and research. Make sure you're not using someone else name, brand etc.

Start small and experiment with your product. If you picked a good one it will pull you and you won't have to push it. Check Ebay to see if anyone else is selling it and how much profit. you need 2-3 X your cost to do well cause expenses eat lots.

A lack of money is ultimately only an excuse for starting a business because there are people who started businesses without any money invested in those business ventures. All it really takes is a combination of gumption and creativity.

The odd part is that even our best schools and finest universities fail to teach those things even if you were to spend six years and upwards of $100, 000 or more for your name to be printed on a piece of paper that awards you an MBA from a purportedly prestigious business school.

If you have absolutely no money consider creative ways to leverage other people's time and skill sets if you really need to bring other people on board. Just be sure to pick producers instead of moochers.

I once had a friend who said he "could build any website that someone else could build" and then he began trying to find someone else to do that work who would then charge us the market rate and nothing got done. I tossed him overboard (figuratively speaking) and the mission was accomplished with someone else who could actually get the work done. I'm sure tossing the mooch overboard saved me a lot of time, money and the associated baggage that comes with knuckleheads who feel entitled to money without having produced anything of value.

If you're creative enough you can even buy property, without any money at all, and then, by being smart, you can begin to net profit from said property in order to have cash flow while also building equity on said piece of property that you can then use as collateral on a low interest loan that you can use to build your business operations.

Just be sure that, if you're going to borrow against assets that you borrow against appreciating assets instead of being the fool that borrows against depreciating assets like automobiles for example.

Most of all, be honest with yourself about your own personal finances. I once met a young man who said he "wanted to start his own business and do better financially" but claimed he "didn't have any money and that his paycheck was spent before he even got it leaving him with no money left over."

I knew he was a cigarette smoker so I used that as an example. If he (this was years ago so the numbers reflect different prices) simply quit wasting money on cigarettes he would easily have had about $100 a month extra (rounding down a bit).

His response was "you want me to quit smoking so I can become a millionaire!?" and I said "No. I don't care what you do. And neither does anyone else. You can be a broke joke the rest of your life and no one is really going to care because every person is only responsible for themselves. Not even your family will give a flying duck fart. So it only matters what you want out of your own life and sometimes you have to be willing to sacrifice stuff that doesn't matter like taking girls out on expensive dates, or having a flashy car, or eating out, or a lot of entertainment, in order to find the money that you already have in order to do what it is that you say you want to do."

I told him "Again, no one is going to care whether you make it or stay at the bottom of the pile struggling the rest of your life away at a job you don't really like and barely making ends meet. So it's up to you. But I do recommend you be honest with at least yourself and quit bullshitting yourself. You have the money. So quit being like a Republican or a Democrat and quit lying to yourself. Tighten your belt and make it happen or shut up and surrender to mediocrity."

He later came back to tell me "thanks for the speech" he continued "I really hated you at the moment you were saying all (of) that, but it was really the best thing that I needed to hear."

I have no idea what ever happened to him but I do know that, from that moment on, it was all on him.
