The way this was explained to me as a kid was very effective and I still think about it often. If you hold your arm out and ask someone to bend it at the elbow, no matter how hard you resist, it would take a massive discrepancy in strength between you two for you to stop them. Now do the same thing while visualizing energy flowing through your arm, straight up like an anime, keeping in mind you are not flexing your muscles. That arm will not move. If I had to guess whats happening, when holding your arm intentionally with your muscles, you are only activating the few muscles you intend to use to stop this movement. However in this relaxed state your partner has to overcome the force of every connected muscle in that joint wanting to stay where it is. I ain't no scientist but its real cool

About fifty years ago my Korean 'master' used me as the weight portion of this demonstration for the entire class without warning me what it was about or what we would be doing. The demonstration was almost exactly like this and the end results were identical. It didn't make sense to me fifty years ago and -- to my western thought processes mind -- it doesn't really make sense to me fifty years later; and bear in mind that I independently practiced taijiquan for twenty of those years. I don't 'get' martial arts mysticism . . . not even when I know that it works.

I see modern Shotokan (Nakayama's) is integrating more Shotokai principles, like relaxing muscles, flexibility and budo. I saw it during the sensei Naka seminar.
I like to understand what is the logic behind each technique in different karate styles because I do think there is always a reason why they do it like that, and it's good to make your karate richer

We used to practice this in Aikido. "Unbendable arm" used it to teach extending far more powerful than arm strength. Taught us not to collapse our arms. Later used it for punching. Good stuff!

If you tense up, your body becomes stiff and easy to lever. If you relax, your body doesn't move as one piece. Try this. Stand up with arms in "T position", fists tightly clenched. Ask friend to pull you to side. Now, do same with loose hands. What happens? 😊

I used to teach that to my students back in the 80's

Enixious.
Ur right.
Also in explained in kung fu.
Wing Chun book, established in 1970s by Bruce Lee.

But
There are still 3 things to be included in the explanation.
Which was not mentioned

We learned this technique in police academy training in Missouri. We were told to visualize energy, like a water hose, extending out from our fingers.

By tensing your entire arm, you engage the antagonist muscles. The extensors are enough for this aikido trick (but it's not a relaxed arm!)

Fifty years ago I learned this exercise from Master Aikido. Two people tried to lower my hand and failed.
Open the palm of your hand and concentrate on the power passing through the fingers. that's all. You don't need much experience.

Martial Arts competition showcased a troop that would stand on the guys outstretched arms. They used him like a jungle gym. Haven't seen similar in decades.

It's about extending KI far away in distance. Ki Aikido, master Koichi Tohei.

Its all true. I remember an aikido master teaching this to me at school. He used all his strength but my arm became instantanely impossible to drop, thats was impressive.

Well, i'am believe his is just using the right muscles, to resist that compression.

The unbendable arm was also made public by O-sensei. (Ueshiba, Morihei ) in the 40s
