The Martian - Starman

Here's my latest video edit of my favorite film, set to one of my favorite songs.

I did say on a previous video that I would be doing a Red Dwarf edit, and that is still happening, but it'll probably still be a couple weeks until its done.

There's a scene in the book where no one is there to meet him at the airlock door (because they all have tasks to do) and he explicitly says "if this was a movie, everyone would be waiting for me at the airlock door, and there would be hugs and smiles and crying". And lo and behold, when it was a movie, there they are.

For me, The Martian is a book and film about our capacity for empathy.

Saving Mark Watney costs billions of dollars and years of work, with nations who would otherwise be at each other's throats. Even still, the shared compassion of mankind and an unspoken rule not to leave our friends behind led to cooperation of dozens of nations at untold expense to save a single man. Men who don't know each other's language, culture, who's leaders hate each other, work together to launch a suicide mission to save Mark at the potential cost of the Hermes' Crew. Despite insurmountable odds, a human desire to help the helpless and care for others managed to pull it off.
