SSD vs HDD or hard drive is a question that I get a lot, so I took a few minutes to answer it for you. Enjoy :)

Buy SSD

Buy Hard Drive

Purchases made through some store links may provide some compensation to Linus Media Group.

I always hear people saying that SSD’s are faster than hard drives, but when I put them both on a desk, neither of them moved. What a lie.

I googled what a dolphin was because I thought a dolpin was a term used for broken hard drives or something, I feel so dumb

I bought the SanDisk 960GB SSD for $250, and it dropped down by almost $50 in the past few months. SSDs are finally getting a lot cheaper.

Best option: Buy a 120gb SSD just for Windows and a 1TB HDD to store your shit

$160 for a 256gb SSD in 2014
$30 for the 240gb SSD I just got on Amazon in 2019.

So basically:
SSD for the OS
HDD for the rest of the files, including games.

Help! My HDD is making a fast clicking sound. It also occasionally blows water and jumps through a hoop.  It seems to respond better after giving it a fish... I think it may indeed be turning into a marine mammal...

I just want to say that I really appreciate your channel being all about quick informative videos. It's not about getting the most ad dollars by making longer drawn out videos. You're actually helping people in the easiest, and best way possible. Thank you!

As of April 7th 2020,
It's crazy how SSD's have come such a long way since 2014. $120 dollars today could get you a 1TB SSD or a 5TB HDD, HDDs still store more but SSDs are not far behind, and with the speed of M.2 or a SATA port its almost impossible to go back to HDDs even if they are larger incapacity.

Its crazy to think looking back now how a 256gb ssd used to be $160. Nowadays you can get on for only about $40-$50.

I bought both an SSD AND a HDD.

I use my SSD to run my complicated programs on, and store my excess data such as movies, videos and temporary downloads on the HDD.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS!

Accessing photos of course can benefit from blazing speeds. My friend loves taking photos, so has a gigantic Aperture library. On his old computer with a HDD it took literally 10-15 minutes to load his library up. On SSD it takes 20-30 seconds.

Even more simply put:

Use SSD for your Operating system (Windows, etc), games, and programs.

Use a hard drive to store huge files like movies, music, and photos.
