Being Irish living Switzerland this video just saved me a small fortune. I bought 3 electrical appliances on the internet for my daughter at Christmas and the were wired up for the US market. I trawled the internet and youtube looking for the answer on how to identify the live wire. Your simple video in less than 2 minutes explained everything. This morning I had one happy daughter. Keep em coming!

Thank you! You gave my simple question a simple answer. I'm replacing the 3-prong plug on a toaster oven that has 3 wires, but only the ground wire has a green covering over it. There are no coverings on the other two wires. So, which is black and which white? Your explanation cut to the quick. The white has raised groves along its side and the black is smooth. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

This was incredibly helpful. I needed to replace a plug on an old lamp, but the power cord had no color codes. I was able to determine which were the black and white by the ribbing (which I had never heard of before) Thanks so much for saving my project!!

Thank You. I tend to forget this. It throws me off because I would figure the different one would be the hot one, but if I am not sure I just grab the multimeter.

Thank you so much for this info, my wire are clear therefore a little hard to see the ribbing, but I will definitely try feeling it.
