Fast Swimming Technique - Butterfly Recovery

Jenna and Ciera Fujiwara visited us from Hawaii to work with coach Gary in San Diego. Ciera has incredible shoulder flexibility allowing her to recover her arms straight above her head. Coupled with a late breath this technique can be the fastest way to swim butterfly with the likes of Joseph Schooling and Rikako Ikee. This technique isn't for everyone as Ciera's sister Jenna has better success with a wider/lower arm recovery. Find out what makes Ciera a perfect candidate for this technique and how we use swim drills to improve!

You are so amazing at the details for superior technique. Your connections to the underlying physics, too, is just superior. I watch a lot of technique and swim videos on YouTube as a High School Swim teacher. No one comes close to the level of nuance that The Race Club brings to swimming.

High arms raise is flexible for those who have short length of arms, just like flying fish catching up surface to move forward more and more powerful. Thanks to those two beauties from Hawaii, and the great teacher also.

Interesting opinion, as always different coaches will have varied views on which arm entry is best or more efficient.

Amazing. Would love to be young and flexible again, but doubt it'll happen.
My approach: yards of body dolphin BD, mix in one arm fly OAF, then mix in full stroke FS. etc. If it feels good, drop the BD. Lather, rinse, repeat.

I didn't have any where close to that much shoulder flex, even when I was young.... Interesting point about high arm recovery...

I noticed you're having them breathe late, can you explain the benefits of this technique? Also, I'm curious about where to find similar video equipment to use with my team. Suggestions?

Cuando nadaba creo que si elevaba el hombro más no estoy consciente si a la vez elevaba el pecho. ¡Excelente observación! Gracias

I thought recover her arms straight above her head is wrong because you need more energy to hold the arm. But this video shows that it depends on? sometimes it's better?

Surely amazing! But isn’t that pushing your luck asking for a shoulder injury to push your shoulder mobility to such an extreme? Is this something to even consider when passed 65 years old? My wisdom is telling me leave that mobility extreme to women that need to use an avantage they have on men which is shoulder mobility and as a man use your power something we have relatively easy.
