I suffered a stroke awhile back and my left handed being partially paralyzed, I figured my guitar playing days were over. Then I saw a guy playing slide guitar and I thought, “I can do that”. I watched your video tonight and about to get a slide and get started playing again. I’m a happy camper. Thanks for giving an old guitar picker a new lease on life.

I'm a drummer was thinking about learning guitar. It was a little difficult for me, I'm a 71 years old blues lover. Then I came across your vid, this made me rethink. Bought my first glass slide, I already think I'm gonna be the next Derek Trucks

Here's a great tip for mastering intonation... play slide in the dark, or at least with your eyes closed, and let your ears hear it when you hit pitch. Trust me.

That's it. I need to pick up a resonator guitar and a slide, and settle down next to a creek or pond with a mason jar of moonshine. :D

For those looking for a great slide, I recommend the Rich Robinson brass slide. First slide I ever used that really sits on your finger well due to the tapered shape inside it. You can put your hand pointing towards the floor and it wont slip off! Because it sits so well, I feel it offers a sense of accuracy other slides never could for me. Highly recommended!

Hello Rhett, This video was nice. My first slide lesson was from Duane Allman himself July 4th weekend in Atlantic City NJ 1971 & yes I am that OLD. I was 17 yrs old. It was on the Steel Pier and they (the Allman Bros. were playing 2nd fidel to THE COWSILLS a family group who's song "Hair" was a number one hit. I was walking down the boardwalk and hear the Allmans warming up in the ballroom, The slide guitars of Duanne and Dickie Betts called to me like a magnet. I paid the $3.00 entry fee and went onto the Pier and went into the side door of the ballroom. There was maybe 30 people there. WOW .. I was dumbstruck ! to say the least. I was already playing my guitar to lessons and playing rock and roll anyway I could, but their music just smacked me. My guita plating was changed forever. After they came off the stage into the ballroom I asked Duanne hiw he got that sound. He was sooo kewl, he said cmon and took me on stage and sat down and grabbed his 52 LP Goldtop and gave me a lesson similar to yours. Wish I had a movie camera or cell then . He truly sat there for 20 minutes teaching me. What a nice guy .. So shy and personable. Gregg was also. He shared his story of Georgia and sitting aroung just playing ALL the time. I HAD his phone number but my MOM washed it in the wash. GRRR. They invited me and my friend who was a drummer to hang out with them and we walked the boards, smoked cigs etc and I bought everything they ever recorded. I watched 3 shows that day for $3.00 Saw them very Christmas at the Spectrum in Phila, PA for years. I love the slide and enjoyed your lesson/video .. Thought I would share, ,
Thx Joe

This is exactly what I needed. I thought it'd be a great time to learn slide guitar, so your timing was perfect . Thank you, Rhett!

Rain Song (DGCGCD) tuning is a really great way to begin playing slide. The repeated triad makes it pretty forgiving and can give a little confidence to someone new to what is probably the most intimidating and specialized style of guitar playing.

Absolutely brilliant video! There is snow ball's chance in hell I could learn to play slide with my pathetic skills and advanced age... but for 15 minutes it really felt like I might! Thanks for the gift of hope and some fabulous playing Mr. Shull.

Very nice! Slide is ONE of the things that has scared me ever since I was in HighSchool attempting the slide intro to ”Freebird” and what was coming out the amp sounded more like a grand piano falling down a flight of stairs than anything else. Now I’m old and thankfully there’s YouTube to “pull my head out” and we’ll take another crack at the slide! Lol. Thanks. Very informative !
