Years later, under the Galactic Empire, their paths crossed again. Thrawn recognized that Anakin and the Emperor’s dark enforcer, Darth Vader, shared uncanny similarities. But unlike most, Thrawn showed no fear of Vader’s ominous presence. In fact, he respected the Sith Lord for his commitment and loyalty to the Empire. And Vader valued the Grand Admiral’s intellect and strategic brilliance. Thrawn’s standing in the Empire was damaged when he failed to capture the rebels on Atollon, but Vader’s trust and respect for him never wavered. The two eventually found themselves back on Batuu, where, much to Vader’s annoyance, Thrawn trolled Vader about his past life as the Jedi General Anakin Skywalker.

Hope Palps had enjoyed the laughs he had. Vader probably just got angrier at Thrawn's trolling. Thrawn had probably figured out that Anakin and Vader were the same.

So uh. Guess we're gonna skip over the fact that during the Imperial Batuu mission Vader contemplated straight up killing Thrawn not once but TWICE. Only reason he didn't was because Thrawn's trolling was another meta level where Vader couldn't tell what his intentions were through the force, not knowing for 100% if he DID actually know he's Anakin, so he didn't. By the end of the mission Thrawn accepts that Anakin Skywalker is dead, then Vader says he'll back the TIE Defender program over the Death Star. Vader TOLERATED Thrawn because he was insanely useful, modicum of respect here and there but dude was ready to kill Thrawn if he REALLY felt like it.

The only person in the Empire I think Vader genuinely liked was Admiral Piett. Vader speculated that Thrawn might be a traitor, he also thought about killing him twice. He didn't do it because Thrawn had the same level of importance to Palatine as Tarkin, and he wasn't 100% sure about his treason. When it comes to Tarkin, there were ups and downs in their relationship, which ended up both strongly respecting each other after Tarkin hunting down Vader, as he asked for. But the story of Piett is the most interesting for me. He was doing everything not to stick out and stay far from Vader, but somehow what he was doing, convinced Vader about his exceptional loyalty and competence to this degree, that he was spontaneously promoted to an admiral and got the Executor under his command. Also notice how captain Nida failed to capture the Falcon, went to apologize Vader and got killed right away. Piett failed the exact same thing shortly after, but Vader walked away without saying a word.
