Does Muscle Weigh More Than Fat?

You often have "fitness experts" tell you that muscle weighs more than fat. Maybe they misunderstood the simple physical concept of volume and density, but they are confusing the heck out of people who try to lose fat and build muscle.

Rest assured, muscle does not weigh more than fat! When you lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, the bathroom scale may stay on the same number or creep along downwards very, very slowly, but you still are losing a lot of fat! And if you are woman, you don't have to be afraid of building muscle, because it takes up less space than fat!

Many people are surprised when I tell them that I'm 275 pounds. I have a classic mesomorph body. No spare tire. Yet, at 6'3", I'm obese by any BMI scale. Even more deceptively, I'm a strength builder so my muscles are hard and compact. Not the puffy and massive muscles of bodybuilders. My doctor thinks all BMI scales are stupid and has long ago told me to ignore them. I'm in great shape. I'm just very solidly built. That's all.
