According to the lost books location _does_ actually matter to the trashcans. The saloon sometimes has the special dish and clints usually ores. I don't remember the others, but it's in the lost books.

13:12 the trashcans ARE actually affected by location. Specific trash cans have chance to drop specific loot beyond just normal trash can loot pool.

BTW, you can place a TV in the mine entrance, and garden pots outside your farm to grow some crops.

The first time I got a trash hat, I thought I somehow spawned an enemy or something, it scared the absolute crap out of me. So I ran away and just slowly came back and realised it was a trash can lid hat.

I'm a month late but you CAN place furniture outdoors, it just has to be on a player set floor! Even level 0 crafting path flooring works!

Also you can hoe the dirt spots that are outside your farm too.. I'm gonna try right now to see if you can plant seeds and water in those spots too.

My first play through of stardew, I didn’t get a lost book until the 1st winter. I don’t remember if I just didn’t hoe the artifact spots very often or if I was just super lucky, but I vividly remember meeting Krobus for the first time, then hoeing a lost book at a spot, right as you walk into town, in the empty field/spot above Sam’s house
