How to Easily Swap Single Coil Guitar Pickups

When soldering you need to heat up the metal and the wire first and then touch the solder on the joint, bringing them up to a temperature hot enough to melt the solder allows the metal to "suck" the solder into the metal creating a perfect connection. The solder should be shiny when it hardens, this shows that it will conduct properly.

You should use those pickup covers from the old pickups dude they look so much better. also, for cloth wiring you can just push the cloth back. Im glad you made this video. Guitar wiring is such a useful skill to learn and really not all that difficult. Appreciate you, dude.

i was going to have someone install new pickups on mine, after watching this video and having worked with detailed wiring in my HO gauge model railroading past I have confidence I can do this myself. Great vid, to the point and very helpfull!

you can also do it the cheats way by cutting and stripping the old wires on the old single coil then soldering the new wires directly to the old ones if you're worried about playing with the pots or they're awkward to get to, I did and it works.

Tyler... it’s vintage cloth “pushback” wire. You just slide it back to expose the wire, no need to strip it.

This has been a great help I got a squire dirt cheap and bought a job lot of strat bits and found some Texas special pickups brand knew and well i can't afford a good strat but next best is a squire with some good pickups.

Also helpful to use the thinnest OD solder you can find. I use 1mm. Much cleaner and helps to more easily avoid solder blobs, cold joints, and shorts.

Great video, I bought an old Mex strat around 10 years ago to play around with and learn how to modify as I didn't to ruin my USA strat. Of course I got lazy and did nothing with it! Maybe this year I'll modify it.
