That retaining ring looks like it could fail!

We need more smart people in the trades as it is. I'm currently a residential carpenter who will be switching to millwrighting soon. It's a shame that it has bad connotations because you must be intelligent as well as strong and have finesse for small things, all around better life skills than university education which prepares people to go to school

T Dr. My cousin was killed by a split rim while he was installing it on a trailer. He didn't mount it or air it, he was doing R&R tire work in the trailer yard. So not only airing it up is dangerous, doing anything with it is.

Spit rim=air up in a cage only! Ice seen them blow and do significant damage even if you put them together right.

We used to have to wire wheel and paint the rim and ring every time we took them off, then air them up in a cage as we walked out of range

I'm an expert in those wheels and styles. Your habit of bolting it on the unit is a good one to be in. If not able to do that you want to secure it in a cage at minimum. Chains are acceptable too.

Split rims are trash but in the end even new state of the art stuff can fail. We had a new tractor tyre explode a week after mounting while the tractor stood still in the yard.

Hate those split rims. I used to put them under the hydraulic lift when airing them up.

Honestly you should get a lock on air chuck on a 10' Length of hose that goes to a handheld gauge with a lever valve so you can fill them remotely. Someone died in a local shop a couple years back filling a truck tire with split rings and no cage.

I worked part time for a friend that had a tire service. Split rings are dangerous. My friend cut an 1 1/2 pipe 4 ft long and welded two studs on it to match the stud pattern. To use it you line up the studs in with the wheel and screwed the lug nuts on the bar. You can reach through the center hole to put the nuts on. Then inflate the tire. If the ring popped loose the bar holds to the tire. You can lay the tire down or stand it up. The jobs I dreaded was new tores on a log trailer on the stakes of the truck. He had a trick to flip them up on the axle. Stand new tire up against the truck tire and flip end over on the truck tire an then lift it up to the tralier axle. Keep them inflated. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

I love your Videos but in my 26 years of Tyre Experience if you don't take the plastic off the Tube or Tyre Patch the Corner rubs through the Tube. Take it off and use Tyre Talcum Powder to eliminate any Excess Vulcanising Cement 👍🏻 I still hate Ring Type Wheels and always hear about deaths in the Trade 😢🙏🏻
