On this week's podcast, Keith discusses the eternal decree of God. He explores various positions including libertarian free will, hard determinism, and compatibilism and explains what position he believes is correct. He also looks at the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Second London Baptist Confession along with a quote from James Pedigree Boice. Oh, and he does all of this while playing Super Mario Bros and Excitebike!

I always liked Doug Wilson's analogy of a writer and his books. Shakespeare decreed all that will take place in Hamlet, yet each character has their own motivations and decisions. Shakespeare is not culpable of murder, but he certainly decreed it. The characters are enslaved to the decree, yet the only way for these characters to be more free is for the author to write more, not less.

How do you have such a high level conversation and also focus on a video game? Multitasking at its finest, Keith.

I found this extremely helpful! Just started Dr. Matthew Everhard’s devotional commentary through the Westminster confession of faith. I appreciated you use of James Pedigru Boyce’s use of the word “plan” I graduated from Southern back in the day.

How anyone can speak deeply while let's-playing is beyond me. I can't even think about anything but the game when I'm gaming lol

A good book on this that I love (but is very much so pro Calvinism) "What About Free Will?: Reconciling Our Choices with God's Sovereignty" by Scott Christensen.

Ultimately, God has free will. Man has an enslaved will.

I previously thought you meant full deterministic, like fleshy robots. I more agree with how you've explain compatiblism. I am concerned for a guy I know who believes he's fated to go to Hell.

34:35 Is that a revised or modernized version of the 1689? Because the copy I have is much more similar to the Westminster. It does add the same things (e.g., no fellowship in their sin), but the overall wording is much more similar.

It seems like the decree is always talked about for the obvious things scripture lays out. Determinism and compatibilism need to answer why God would need to control a man in a nation far away from let’s say thinking about something sinful for 3 seconds. Something such as that, seemingly inconsequential for God’s plan through Christ. How could that come anywhere near thwarting the plan of God?

Legacy of Kain is a game that I think would appeal to Calvanists. Highly encourage you to least watch a vid of the story summary. It's all about free will vs fate.

I don't know about your wife but it takes me about 10m to beat mario. So that would also make a very short vid.
