In theaters December 14, 2012.
"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever...Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Regardless of your opinion of these movies, they offered what will likely be the very last chance for any of us to go to Middle Earth again. And for that, I'm thankful.

I remember back in 2012, I really wanted to watch this movie in theaters. But I unfortunately did not have a driver's license and had nobody else to take me to see the movie. So my grandma took me to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. She went in not knowing anything about Tolkien or Middle-earth, and she did not like watching movies that were scary or violent. She figured she would sit in her seat and eat popcorn the entire time while I watched the movie. But as we watched the movie, she became completely enthralled in it. She loved the scene when the dwarves started arriving at Bag End, and was on the edge of her seat whenever the characters were in danger, and genuinely wanted to see them survive. It was a great experience for both of us.

After that, I waited patiently for three years until all three Hobbit movies were released and watched before showing her The Lord of the Rings. She ended up loving all six movies. Not only that, but it opened up the chance for me to watch all kinds of other movies and TV shows with her that she normally wouldn't ever consider watching, and she ended up enjoying a good number of them.

"Why Bilbo Baggins? Maybe because I'm afraid and he give me courage"

Regardless of what the hipsters saying, this scene alone show how much this movies are wonderful and how much Peter truly understand the spirit of Tolkien's writing.

I happen to adore this movie. Anyone in disagreement can enjoy Twilight for all I care.

Certainly not as good as LOTR trilogy, but still a more than worthy prequel trilogy.

"Home is now behind you, the world is ahead." Goosebumps when I heard that line and thought of Return of the King.
I cannot wait for this movie.

I have read the books and watched all the movies. Both trilogy's are amazing and Peter Jackson have done an awesome movie. Love the movies and will never be forgotten.

Gandalf says the opening lines to Edge of night which is the song Pippin sings in Return of the King “Home is behind you, the world’s ahead”

At first I didn't liked this movie, but after seeing the whole trilogy now, I can say I really loved the movies, they all fit together really nicely, and to be fair, much of the things people hated about this movies are really just not that important.
I love the scenes were they just talk, make jokes, fight, it makes them feel real.
In the second one their travel becomes more and more dark, and the third one finishes with one big 30 minutes long war, that tights all together, this trilogy was made, from the beginning, as one large movie, divides in tree.
I can say I love this movies, not as much as TLOTR trilogy, wish is more mature, but people, go read the books again, all of them.

The Hobbit book: For Kids (But also for open mind adults)
The Hobbit movie: For Kids (But also for open mind adults)

TLOTR books: (For adults)
TLOTR movies: (For adults)

The tone of The Hobbit trilogy is just right, when you see it in retrospective.
I'll gladly make my future kids watch this movies in their young years, they are full of healthy fun, jokes, action, but also drama, sadness, danger, love, loss, etc.

It's the whole package people!

i know i know I'm pretty late to the party but i just wanted to say that the hobbit was my favourite book (still is and ever will be, thanks to my dad who loves it just as much) and back when I was a kid I saw the lord of the rings so many times (favourite movies) but when my dad told me that they are making a movie out of the hobbit I was scared they will ruin it...
Fast forward to the day we watched it in the cinema and we loved it.
Alone the actors who made the characters so lovable....damn was I sad when I remembered the end of the book

I used to be disappointed in the trilogy but, after giving myself some time, I actually loved this movie!! I loved how deep they went into the story and how detailed it is! For exemple, the dinner scene is much more exciting and funny than I imagined compared to the book. The Eagles scene is mesmerizing!! Like it or not, you have to thank Peter Jackson for bringing us back to Middle Earth on screen after nearly a decade. The Hobbit trilogy may not be as oscar worthy as the Lord of the Rings, but it is certainly fun to watch when you let go of expectations.
