The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (into boredom) - Caravan Of Garbage

Caravan Of Garbage has returned to look at what is probably considered the second most disappointing prequel trilogy of all time. Director of The Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson reluctantly returns to the directors chair for 2013's An Unexpected Journey, the first very long entry in an adaptation of a very short book. Come with us as we talk about the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey and twelve mostly interchangeable tiny bearded men. Thanks for listening to our review!

Look. Just to get ahead of it, when we recorded this and I complained about Gandalf being overpowered I forgot the moment in Lord Of The Rings when he got lightening to hit his sword then he stabbed a fire monster to death. What I'm basically now saying is this and the other Hobbit films are actually a perfect series of movies

I will never get tired of learning “Blue Harvest” lore.

Bilbo wasn't asking a riddle when he said "what having I got in my pocket?", he forgot that he put the ring in his pocket.

I'd love to see a Caravan of Garbage for:
1. Indiana Jones franchise
2. Pirates of the Caribbean frinchise
3. Batman Mask of the Phantasm
4. Ghost Rider 1 and 2
5. Hellboy 1, 2 and reboot

"Grab that gem" is particularly appropriate for this trilogy.

I'd like to add that in the novel, Tolkien casually mentions that they passed Stone Giants when passing through the mountains. The film turns this into an entire sequence where the Stone Giants form the mountains themselves such that a mountain gets up and punches another mountain in the face while the party tries to hold on and there's a lightning storm flashing like crazy. I know that people vommitted during these frames per second, but I find that hilariously over-the-top filler.

The greatest part about them returning after a month of being gone is the fact that they remembered to keep “green trivia“ going

To be fair to this movie, Tolkien only fleshed out about 4 of the dwarves.

It’s not that it was filmed in 5k. It’s that there’s virtually zero motion blur from the high frame rate. That combined with the way they kept everything ultra sharp in post production, or even sharpened it more rather than softening it like they do in real movies, is what creates such an unpleasant aesthetic feel to these movies. It’s a comedy of errors. But the lack of motion blur is 98% of what makes it look like a shitty high school play recorded on an HD handicam.

So something to look into, for green trivia, the guys who play the dwarves actually ended up in a super nasty dispute with the studio and got uninvited to the premieres etc and kind of black listed.

It was related to predatory filming practices that they basically forced New Zealand to change the laws to accomodate. Those guys spoke against it and get told to kick rocks and were snubbed.

That Ocarina of Time music out of nowhere for the trivia transition was masterful. Absolutely some of the finest work this channel has ever produced.

Well, the thing with the hobbit wasn't so much about not allowing Sauron to get a Dragon later, it was more about getting a force to protect the north east of middle earth. After the defeat of Smaug, a lot of men and dwarfs went back to live in those hills and they fortified the lonely mountain and the lake. During the war of the ring, a great force of orcs and men attacked those places and if those people were not there to protect that flank, the Green forest of Legolas would have fallen, probably even Imladris (Rivendel). Rohan woudn't have had a chance against Orthanc. Just imagine Theoden fighting a freaking dragon during the battle in Helm's Deep.

It's not exaggeration to say that the adventure in the Hobbit saved Middle earth one hundred years later.

Something you’ll notice throughout the entire trilogy is that the parts of the Hobbit movies which are good (or sometimes great) are often the most accurate to the source material.

The parts which are boring (or bad) are usually the least accurate or added stuff entirely

My favorite part was when Bilbo yelled “It’s Hobbin’ time!”

In the wise words of RedLetterMedia:
"Peter Jackson still knows how to direct a movie. He just forgot how to edit it."

True Story: I was born in 1972, and my father was a HUGE rings fan. Wore suede elf boots and a green cape, flew a flag of Sauron off his balcony, total hippie hobbit-freak. There is a family story of my parents fighting over what I would be named. Mom wanted to name me "Christopher Robin". Dad insisted I would be named "Thorin Oakenshield". Luckily, this was the early seventies, so Dad wasn't around for my birth, and mom was unconscious. Grandmother named me after my dad, nice, normal names, but we always talked about how hard school would have been with that name.

I wish Del Toro had gotten to make his version. One of the greatest missed opportunities in film history.

I actually recently rewatched these and found a new appreciation for them, especially when you take into account the rough and tight scheduling BTS. Obviously no catch to the LOTR but I think despite a few over the top sequences and the couple of CG lead characters these movies are well executed.

Would love to have seen a version where Jackson was given enough prep time to plan it to his liking though.

The fan edits of this into a single film are so much better than the trilogy was. 90s minutes is more than enough time for these characters.
