The Dwarf Thrór was king of Erebor, and brought an era of prosperity to his kin, until the arrival of Smaug the Dragon. Drawn by the amount of gold that the Dwarves have amassed, Smaug destroyed the nearby town of Dale before driving the Dwarves out of Erebor. Thrór's grandson, Thorin Oakenshield, sees King Thranduil and his Wood-elves on a nearby hillside and is dismayed to find them taking their leave rather than aiding his people. This makes Thorin develop an everlasting hatred of Elves.

What amazes me about Ian Holm's narration is that he actually had Parkinson's disease really bad by this point and had already retired from acting because he physically couldn't do it anymore. Peter Jackson urged him that they'd just work around it, give him as many takes as long as he needed, give him the lines, whatever, they'd edit it, they'd even build sets IN England because he couldn't travel to New Zealand anymore - it was worth it and would mean so much to Ian's fans to hear him narrating this as old Bilbo to tie the story together. And in the end Ian agreed, and it was his swan song in acting.

I love the detail of Thorin's reaction to cheating the elves. It's like he's wondering why his grandfather would ever do such a thing, it's a bit confusing.

Then, when they're in dire need of help, that rivalry results in the elves abandoning them to their fate. Thranduil was just as petty and stubborn, and it's no wonder the conflict between the two grew so bitter and remained for so long.

Omg the heartbreak in Lee Pace’s eyes when the gems are taken from him shows that Thranduil was - and still is - completely and utterly in love with his wife. He is just that desperate to get this part of her back, and losing the gems is like losing her all over again.

It is incredible how Tolkien nails the bad ambition and toxicity of power. Guy was a genius to relay it in a fantasy book. Peter Jackson made it stronger on his first trilogy, some people thinks he overdid it. I believe its perfect.

I had my issues with the Hobbit films but parts like this capture the magic well

Man hearing Bilbo’s extended lines, it almost like he’s putting himself back in the time when Thorin lost his way during The Battle of The Five Armies, and for what.

I like it when Bilbo writes the story about the dwarves, their home and the arkenstone.

Remember all this was caused indirectly by Sauron because as a dwarf lord, Thrór wore one of the dwarven rings of power and the sickness described in this scene was because the ring was poisoning his mind and he became greedy with gold lust.

This scene kinda explains partly why Thrandruil felt little need to endanger the lives of his elven soldiers to assist the folks who had cheated him of his wife's jewels.

The very start of this music marks the beginning of the journey for me all over again. I watch this franchise so many times throughout the year, and music is a really indescribably beautiful part about the entire saga. In the end of return of the king, It encapsulates the feeling of the end chapter, and flipping the last page. But then you get to restart, and hear this music all over again that marks the start.

It does appear sad that the alliances between the dwarfs and elves got broken.

The Dwarves were given the Jewels to Craft into lovely necklaces by the Elves.
When They completed the task, they demanded the said Jewels from the elves as payment for their work because they deemed it extremely beautiful.
And that is what started the enmity between the Elves and the Dwarves.

The Dwarven king Thrór wore a ring of power and was never corrupted by it. No Dwarf was.

the Dwarves are not themselves sometimes when their fear tries to control them but they are in fact always very caring and kind when they overcome their madness and sickness that made them do bad things they did not want to do at all

What amazes me is the industrial scale engineering and technological advancement of the dwarves. I wonder if there was any mountain based civilization that could resembles that of the dwarves.

Them Dwarfs are wild. Not even a hand rail or some caution tape. Bottom of that mine must be filled with the remains of drunken little men.
