Christopher Columbus is a polarizing historical figure today, but there was a time when many championed his voyage from Spain to the Americas in 1492. Columbus Day is observed on October 11 each year to commemorate his famous trip, but in recent decades many are pointing to the harm committed under his governance and the subsequent European colonization of the Americas. For instance, the Taíno population of the island of Hispaniola was nearly exterminated due to disease and enslavement.

Columbus and his deeds will continue to be hotly debated, to be sure, and it only gets weirder the more you dig. Here is the strange and bizarre truth about Christopher Columbus.

His journal is written in third person because he didnt write it, Bartolome de las casas did. The original written by columbus is lost. Do your research.

Columbus did not enslave Africans in Haiti. That happened 200 years later. Actually it’s been proven that some of his crew members were of African heritage after examining their remains and teeth.

Why do they teach us about how “great” he is and how he was a national “hero”, we shouldn’t have a holiday to celebrate the terrible things he’s done, we should replace Columbus Day with a holiday respecting all people of every skin (black, white, Indian, Mexican etc.) you think of the name

Columbus was merely remarking on what he studied concerning the Aristotelian view that the Earth consisted of nested spheres, where the much larger sphere of water contains the sphere of land. The sphere of land pokes out of the sphere of water, which would look like a nipple on a (spherical) breast. That is all it means. He had no idea that Aristotle was completely wrong. Ironically, it was his discovery of South America on his 4th voyage that did in the theory since land was not supposed to be anywhere above that area of the sea. The sea was supposed to keep rising (hence the high seas); he was supposed to be sailing upward, away from any land.

Africans discovered the America's 3 centuries before Columbus. The indigenous people of Hispanola gave Columbus gold and metal tipped spears. He asked where they got it and they told him dark skinned travelers. That gold that was on the tip of the spears was found on West Africa. They followed the same currents that the hurricanes follow

@08:29 Many years later, when Settlers were colonizing North America, they needed a white hero to name as the person who discovered the land to justify their colonization and mistreatment of Native Americans. They randomly chose Christofo Colombo because his name had “Christ” in it, and to make it sound more European and Christian, they changed his name to Christopher Columbus, even though he never stepped foot on American soil.

Christopher Columbus was not "confused & ignorant" as Grunge states. His knowledge of the earth and space was insightful based upon what was available at time. He also had the backbone to act on his theories and change the world. I always love the ignorance of arrogant liberals who "monday morning quarterback." The narrator truly I doubt would have the courage to sail across the Atlantic in a boat like Columbus' having our present day knowledge, let alone launching as Columbus did with his educated theory. Shame on you "judgmental" Grunge!

I know Columbus wasn’t the only person to land in the Americas and that he wasn’t exactly a nice guy, but he was a fascinating guy to read about.

The guy taught the earth was flat too lol. About 2, 000 years before Christofer Columbus struck the New World (1492 AD), Greek mathematicians and great minds Pythagoras (570-495 BC) and Aristotle (384-322 BC) proved the world wasn’t flat. In fact, Columbus stumbled onto American shores in part because he grossly underestimated Earth’s circumference.
