A little over a year ago, I quit my job to start a farm in Vermont. Was it worth it? Well, the answer is not so simple. There have been a lot of lessons learned here on our small duck and goose farm.

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

Best advice ever.
My wife's 85 year old grandma was leaving our home after a visit, as she walked out our front door for the last time, she quickly turned back and said,
"David, learn to live with less".
Genius beautiful lady.
Thanks Gramma.

"The job" is your life" not the other way around, "your life is the job". You (and your amazing wife) are the CEO's of your life. Bravo - great story and loved the cut-ins.

I quit my career of 24 years as a retail stockbroker to start my own handyman gig. Turned out I am going to be fine and I love what i do.

“I quit my high paying job to start a farm in Vermont... I’ll discuss whether it was worth it.
*But before we do that, let’s check on the ducklings!”*

gonna take a wild guess and say it was worth it

You’re a fortunate man to have realized your dreams and achieved them while young enough to be able to take full advantage of it. I wish I had had that much foresight. Continue the dream!

I'm 16, lived on a farm my whole life and never really appreciated it. Videos like yours have shown me how special it is to grow up with animals and fresh food all around me, may take a 45 minute drive to see other humans and towns but its definitely worth it.

The sounds of the geese and ducklings is like heaven compared to the corporate environment ;)

I quitted my urban life right after graduating from University, I left central Europe moved to Russia, purchsed property and started a farm, despite the fact that Russia is not the best place for such things i never regret that I started farming.

I'm only 25, with barely 3 years of a corporate career under my belt, but I already kind of feel like I made a mistake pursuing my white-collar job that I worked so hard in college for. Your story is so inspiring to me. I just found your channel, and it's such a relief to see that there are people like you and your wife in the world who actually plan out and follow a dream like this. I hope I find my own dream, and make it a reality like you did. Best of luck with everything, and your ducks and geese quack me up!

I watched 2 ads before the video start, didn't skip them. I always do that with channels I'd like to support, specially small channels.

You followed your dreams, went after it. Even if it dosent succeed you can say you tried and wont die wondering "What if?"
Good for you man.

Good for you. The best time of my life was on my grandparents farm every summer. It's a lot of hard work but well worth it. My grandpa had a job off the farm too. Just enough to help make things go.

Thank you. What a great video. We just quit our jobs and moved to Michigan to do the same thing and we are definitely out of our comfort zone but loving every minute of it!

I waited till I retired early at 56 to consider this change and I was in a car accident and wrecked my back, now I cant do it, wish I would have done it when I was younger cause I cant do it now, cheers to you, I'm around 60 now and may still raise some chickens, but you rock on man, glad you are enjoying it!

Thanks for sharing your story. You inspire those of us who are firmly on the ledge and everybody in society says, “You’re stupid to do that.” I hear you about the rewards of farm life, the hard work it entails (no PTO, national holidays, nor break time!), and the small if any monetary compensation. But I’m right with you - rock on !

I'm about a couple of years younger to you and planning to resign in a few years. This is me researching everything before taking the plunge.
You're an inspiration man. The challenges, the success everything is a lesson for me. I only hope to have enough courage and dedication to see through the toughest days.

I did the same thing! I quit my "dream job" at 29 and bought property and am transitioning to moving off grid. Already 100% worth
