Try a half size smaller for the Escalante. It's very stretching material.

Always fun watching a fellow sprinting try not to run fast

I had shin splints for months after getting back into running. I thought the answer was supportive, stable, and soft like Hoka’s (I got the Bondi 8s). After one run, I caused even more damage to my legs and had to wait two weeks to recover.

I got the first shoe you recommended a few days ago and it’s almost as if all of my pain is gone. I’m finally landing on my mid foot and driving like I did when I was a kid. These shoes have made running enjoyable again. 0 drop for the win!

Thats a good option, and if you’d like to stick kinda barefoot, there are shoes called five fingers. They’re basically shoes that give a barefoot feel, but stick protect your feet from hazards. Wouldn’t recommend regular ones for a rainy day though.

I think people should at least be aware that running on hard, unnatural surfaces is very taxing for your body and shoes like the escalante do little to absorb that impact. They are great for the reasons mentioned in the video - I’ve used them plenty - but are minimally cushioned. For some people (like myself) that can lead to or exacerbate injury. Toe drop is not inherently a bad thing in my view, as cushioning is an important feature in helping us cope with unnaturally hard running surfaces. Altra also has higher cushion shoes, which might be worth a look. Not medical advice, just another perspective

As a man with 6 toes on each foot, how dare you taunt me with toe socks!?

Altras are great at backpacking too. I brought 2 identical pairs to Philmont and did 140+ miles without foot pain or issues

I work for a local running shoe store in my small town and we specialize in catering shoes to the person. Everyone has a different foot overall. The Altras as a brand are generally great for anyone with a lower arch or instep generally due to their lack of a heel to toe drop, but as far as running goes like he said be prepared if you’re going from something like a mizuno to an altra. The difference in heel will be present enough on that first run if you aren’t used to it and will give a serious workout to the calves, but afterwards getting used to it is a breeze. As for personal preference I wear the paradigms as an everyday walking shoe and the Torin or provision work amazing for running depending on if you need anti-pronation equipment or not.

Used to run barefoot all the time. You knew you were into a good race if everyone kicked their shoes off first.

Altra makes amazing shoes. I have their lone peak mid trail runners, and they’re the best shoes I’ve ever used. They give me enough confidence to run full speed in the muddy Utah falls, winters and springs. Even downhill.

Their tread designs are a bit goofy tho, as demonstrated in this video as well.

I started running barefoot a couple months ago because of a game of tag. Myself shoes fell off and my speed went grew tenfold and I was started to enjoy running more than I did before.

You can also make leather 9th century shoes that would fit you perfectly

Wouldn’t recommend barefoot running if flat footed it’s a great way to get tibial stress fractures. By the time I ETS’d from the Army I had stage 3 stress fractures all the way up both tibia and that was with shoes but I never wore orthotics to try and correct for having no arch. I would’ve explored some options to rectify the issue but my unit had a culture of calling soldiers that sought medical dirtbags so I ran in extreme pain for years.

"I'm not the right demographic for this" I mumble as i scroll YouTube at 1 am with no intention of running barefoot or otherwise unless I'm being chased by a rabid squirrel and even then.. maybe it would listen to reason

I've been wearing these daily for 3 months and after I got into track and did some speed work my ankle, especially my peroneus longus got super sore.

I’ve been privileged to be a part of the barefoot community for 2 years now. I’ve tried a variety of minimalist footwear and my favorite are Jikatabis. I would encourage you try them for yourself, you may never go back.

I love how you mentioned that its mostly for people who have soft feet and arent used to it cause im always barefoot and very used to it so i was confused on why you were making those expressions while running on the asphalt lol
