This is one of Boss’s best selling pedals. Lol They already sell a crazy number of them. No need to change the name.

I feel like that's similar to saying that the jazzmaster needs a new name because it's in the hands of a lot of indie/punk players. I don't think it necessarily needs to change the name, just do an ad campaign that shows it can do more than just the blues

I have a Keeley Super Phat Mod, which is based on modifications Robert Keeley used to do on the BD-2 but with further modifications. It's displaced all my other drives, except for the Electro Harmonix Hot Tubes I use as a clean boost.

They buy it for the same reason they buy a Jazzmaster. It’s legendary.

It sounds like an amp because it is! It’s a few JFET mu amps (a style of transistor gain stage) into an FMV (Fender/Marshall/Vox) tone stack with fixed values. You can actually change a few of the resistors into potentiometers and you’ll have the same treble, middle and bass amp controls on a run of the mill Fender Deluxe Reverb (or the vast majority of Fenders really from Bassmans to Princetons). It changes quite a bit as of the tone control (not the tone stack) onwards but the first 2/3 of the pedal is just the front 1/2 of a Fender amp with transistors instead of tubes.

Why would you change the name of a pedal that is 30 years old and that almost every single guitar player knows? I don't think Boss is missing out here, they know better than anyone what they're doing.

To be fair, Boss already did something with it, the Angry Driver, which as a more fitting name and a cracking parallel distortion mode

It was my main distortion for my stoner rock band, paired with another od in front to boost it and make it more fuzzy.
The BD2 + OD3 is a match made in haven for gnarly sounds, paid like 70€ for both of them.

I had the exact same thought about the name of the pedal ! I went and saw All Them Witches last year here in belgium and i was completely geeking out over the guitarist overdriven tone. First thing i did when i came out of the venue was to check my phone and see a picture of his pedalboard. I was shocked to discover that he only had a blues driver. A year later i bought mine, came in the mail 3 days ago, now im hooked !

A blues driver with the eq section of a metal zone would be awesome

I've always thought they should call it the blue driver instead. Late 90's, when I started playing guitar, I was hesitant to even try it, because i didn't play blues music, and assumed it wasn't the sound i was going for. Then i tried it, finally, early 2000's, by chance, and have loved it ever since. But yeah, Boss needs to call it Blue Driver.

I agree with all of this! I have loved that sound since the late 90s

I love the blues driver, had it for years and never had left my board. Used it as a boost, used it as a crunch, hell even a fuzz with the gain cranked. Very versatile pedal. Honestly everyone should get one and try it out. Also, everyone should jam the blues too. I’m mainly a metal player but love noodling blues in my bedroom when not at practice. Even if my blues kicks are sub par. 😅

This one time, at the music store, I went looking for a mid-gain pedal that wouldn't do the "hair riding on top of clean tone" thing that most TS or SD style pedals do (some like it, but with humbucker it's just not a great rhytm sound). Anyway, after trying almost every pedal in the store, I walked out with the one pedal I didn't expect to like, the Blues Driver (not even the Waza Craft version, just plain old vanilla). It has so much range and dynamic. It's a great "always on" pedal that you can then precede with other drives for more gain, it takes it well!

The blues driver is so good. Glad you gave it a second look.

I guess it depends on what your preconceptions of various genres are. A bluesy guitar tone is basically just a less distorted tone = overdrive.

I actually like the fact that it's called a Blues Driver and a lot of players overlook it. I love when a fellow guitar player checks out my pedalboard and says "You're getting THAT tone from a Blues Driver?"

Also, don't overlook how great the pedal cleans up from the volume control of your guitar. Ben McLeod demonstrates this on his youtube page. He shows how he can set up the BD to be just as clean as his Fender Twin and ride the volume for a lot of different gain flavors.

Wait until this guy figures out there’s an Angry Driver

If you've found a new love for the BD-2 you now need to go try the JB-2 Angry Driver, Boss' collab with JHS. It s a BD-2 with an Angry Charlie (Marshall in a box) with ton of options. It's killer!

When I was a teenager learning guitar and buying my first pedal, after trying the different Boss pedals in the shop I picked the Blues Driver over their Overdrive and Metalzone. I kept questioning if it was the right decision since I wanted to play punk music, but this was called a "Blues Driver."

You're totally right about the marketing. I'm glad I trusted my ears; it ended up serving me well throughout the years, but as a young guitarist I kept second-guessing if I knew what I was doing.
