Can a TOTAL BEGINNER (my HUSBAND) Learn to CROCHET With the WOOBLES?

Have you been wondering if the Woobles kits are good for crochet beginners to learn how to make amigurumi toys? ME TOO!!

Well today I’m not just giving you my opinion, but I’m using my very own husband as a guinea pig to test out the Woobles. He’s a total newbie, he’s never picked up a crochet hook in his life and we are going to see if he can learn how to crochet with this kit.

I'm an engineer father, and have gotten 2 Woobles kit for my daughter. As an engineer, I absolutely loved the scientific section of this video from your husband. As for the crochet, that's for my daughter. I will definitely get the Clover hooks for her too. THANK YOU for providing this video feat. your husband. I've watched some other Wooble reviews which actually bored me. LOL! This video kept me awake the whole time.

Loved this video. Your husband's ability to analyze the roughness of the crochet hooks made it more than the standard review. Excellent teamwork.

"Who knew that tribology would apply to crochet hooks?" As a crafter and engineer, I LOVED this video! I showed it to my engineer husband and we laughed in delight at your husband testing the hooks with his work equipment. Wearing his work shirt was a great touch, too!

So cute how you are the expert in the first half, and he becomes the expert in the second half with the profilometer

This is SO precious. Came here to see a video of a beginner try to crochet, but I left with relationship goals XD The fact that he not only took a liking to your hobby, but he also brought his own work/hobbies into it IS SO SWEET.

"I'm going try to sit on my hands, " .... 2 seconds later. "We have some black yarn...."

The hook is so important. When I first started I had a hook from Amazon. I thought I was having difficulty crocheting, as I just couldn’t get the slip stitch to work. Once I purchased a smooth hook, I quickly discovered it wasn’t that I couldn’t do it, it wasn’t bad technique on my part, or anything else I was doing incorrectly. It was poor tools.
The Woobles kit has an option to purchase the kit without the hook. On the Woobles website, it is $5 cheaper to choose the kit without the hook. You could purchase a better hook with the savings.

First time I heard someone explain the cost factor as a course instead of just a kit. Brilliantly done.

I LOVE the geek-out moment with the tripology! I was completely fascinated with that side trip in the video!

My teenager had a bad learning experience with crochet in middle school art class, but became interested when I started making amigurumi. I was thinking about suggesting a Wooble kit for a while, but this video convinced me. Thanks for the tip about the hooks, too--I have collected (and lost, and rebought, and found) many, many Clover 4mms.

But it was your husband who actually convinced my kiddo; they want to be an engineer, and thought the profilometer was the coolest thing ever (next to your husband)!

As a scientist who uses an optical profilometer as well as a crocheter, this was the best video overlap ever! Thanks so much for the informative review.

For people who wants to know from more people who has tried it:

Woobles was my first introduction to ANY kind of knitting. I have ADHD, so concentrating in one hobbies is impossible for me lol (disclaimer as with any other MH disorders my experience will probably be 70% different from others w/the same disorder). I’ve made all the first Harry Potter collection(including the pet accessories); some accessories of another summer like collection and a shark, here are my thoughts:

1. As a beginner, it’s amazing. The videos are slow, have subtitles (English) if needed, and explain everything. They are easy to follow and is awesome that you can see how it should look like. They name each video with the skill you are going to learn for that particular row.
The old videos are harder to follow and confusing, and too long for my brain to pay attention to them. However the old videos comes with a pdf with only the pattern instructions which is awesome.

2. If you are not a beginner or maybe you are but you know the basics, the videos are too slow and frustrating. But easy to jump ahead and just look for the pattern instructions and how it should look like. If you get one of the wooble that has the older videos, when you know the basic is so much better because you get the pdf and can use the videos just for reference.

3. The yarn. OMG the yarn. Know that I moved to more challenging projects, how I miss this yarn. You can see each stitch, it does not breaks or separates into little strings of yarn, and is so much easier to count it. This yarn helps you a lot, so I do recommend to even buy it if you want to continue practicing before moving to “real” yarn. This yarn is like training wheels. And once you feel comfortable with your skills, changing to normal yarn will add a new challenge because it’s not as manageable (I really don’t know how else to describe it).

4. For my ADHD peeps. Doing amigurumi (what woobles basically are) is a good place to start when you want to learn crochet. Each row is a new mission. You rarely are repeating, which helps with the “new” feeling that we need.

5. Easy does not always means “most practical” mean in they teach you the easy way, this doesn’t mean is the only way or that there’s a faster way, it just means it’s the most easy way to learn it. Once you move onto sth else, you will be able to see more ways of doing the same stitch and choosing which works best for you is your choice! Some skills I’ve learned through woobles I changed it for other ways that were more practical or functional. Some other skills I kept as I learned them because it was the easiest even if not the most functional.

6. The hooks are not the best, ngl. They hurt and made my hands cramp or sore. However, they are okay, I would recommend getting other kind, if you are able to go and buy them in person so you can see how much your hand adjust to them.

7. You won’t leave everything that it is to be learnt. However, you do learn the basic. If you want to learn more advance stitches or learning how to read visual(international) patterns you will need to find another option.

I’ll add more in the comments if with the video I get more ideas

16:10 Right after she said, "you know what we could do" I got an ad, and the first thing the ad said was, "nobody likes to be told what to do" 😂

I have done several Woobles kits, and I recently started a Harry Potter kit. I crocheted about 2.5 rounds with that hook before I just couldn’t anymore. My hook hand felt fatigued so quickly. I went and switched the hook out for an earlier Woobles hook (blue, and I would say probably very much like your Hobby Lobby hook), and my hook hand instantly felt better. My theory is that the Woobles themed hooks have become such a collector’s item, and the Woobles have grown so much in popularity that they found a company that can make them themed hooks in bulk, and they are much cheaper (lower quality) than their earlier generic blue hooks. Just my 2 cents.

I will say that the Woobles got me so hooked on crochet that I came to YouTube to find crochet channels to watch, and I found you! 😊 So they are certainly doing something right if I want to step up my crochet game after less than a year.

Of course I was interested in the Wobbles for my beginner friends. BUT the profilometer and tribology (new vocab words) sent my science geeky heart over the moon. I'm sharing this with a very good friend who crochets and is a physics teacher.

My grandmother was a crotcheting demon. She made the most amazing and intricate lace. I still have a number of her pieces. My wife is quite at it too she did an area rug with something that resembles fishnet line and is working on a bed spread that weights about 10 pounds. The detail and workmanship are out of this world.

It also good for arthritis. My grandmother crotched till she died at 91

Your and your husband's experiment was SO Fascinating. Something I learned since restarting my crochet journey during COVID was that quality tools make such a difference. Thank you for showing us what that looks like under a microscope!

This has been very informative! I learned to crochet with The Woobles in Feb 2023, and I still buy the kits for their cuteness factor. Last year when I first branched out to other yarns, I bought Clover Amour hooks. After that, I found the Woobles hooks unusable. I thought it was because of some residual adhesive from the handle making the shaft sticky. A few of the special hooks still had a layer of thin plastic on the shaft that manufacturing didn't remove. But thanks to your hubby's tests, I know it's not something that can be scraped or buffed off, because the metal itself is rough. It's fun to see the science of it.
Fun fact for you: Even though the Sharks fought over them, Justine and Adrian ultimately did not partner with any sharks. You can search for a quote from Mark Cuban where he said they outsharked the sharks. They seem to be doing really well on their own.

Elise, I used to work with your husband as a vendor. He is great and we have talked crocheting and other crafts. He is the one that hooked me up with your channel. I love that he was a willing participant. Tell him hello! Love your videos!!!
