Tactics Explained | 1982-1990: A History Of The World Cup

Football was now a truly global, visible sport as the 1970s had proven, and the World Cup its most significant event both in terms of prestige and viewing figures. However, while the first six World Cups saw an average of 4.28 goals per game, peaking in Switzerland in 1954 with 5.38, the 1960s onwards saw a general trend of decline that reached its lowest ebb in Italia ’90, where a paltry 2.21 goals per game were scored. Defence was king as the free-scoring ‘50s receded from view, but Spain ’82 did provide some respite from the doldrums.

Just to address a something here, Brazil did make it out of the group stages in 82. What actually happened was that year instead of a knock out round and quarter finals they had a second ground round with 4 groups of 3 and only The winner went to the semis.
Brazil got knocked out on their second group.

It would had been nice to see the tactics of Colombia in 1990 and how they managed to achieve a tie against Germany. They played with a false 9, a creative playmaker (Valderrama), a strong box to box (Rincón) and THE showman-libero-goalkeeper (Higuita). Hope to see a video about that one day... great work.

Ahh the 80's. Tactics were interesting back then. It's awesome how there's a resurgence of teams playing 3 at the back. Of which i throughly enjoy. More teams should play with 3 at the back.

Brazil of 82 were arguably another of the best teams never to win the World Cup. I remember watching the Italy v Brazil game in 82. It was fantastic!

Bearzot's Italy actually adopted what was called 'gioco all'Italiana' - the 'mixed zone' which was a combination of pressing and traditional Italian man-marking with the emphasis on the former. Players who moved out of position were covered by a team-mate and players were required to both defend and attack so it was more fluid and versatile than the catenaccio practised by the Italian side that reached the final in Mexico in 1970.

Thing I love about watching these videos is that I love to see if I can sort of recreate these tactics on FIFA with a career mode and see if I can possibly improve them or see if they can carry me.

1:05 When you mention this particular brazilian midfield, it is worth to mention that Cerezo was chosen for Italy's match because Batista left the previous match, against Argentina, injured after being hit by Maradona. With Batista the brazilian midfield would be slightly different as he used to play more defensively.

1:37 - point of order here - 'Group C' was in the second round. For those not familiar between 1974 and 1982 the world cup had two successive group stages like the champions league does now.

1986: Still the best tournament in World Cup history. And the World Cup fittingly remembered as the one where one player had so much influence on an entire team

I don't care if that Brazil team from 82 didn't win the World Cup. As a 12 year old watching that tournament I remember the brilliant football from Zico, Eder, Socrates, another guy called Dircieu or something like that, team scored some brilliant free kicks and proper worldie goals. It was the first Brazil team I had watched properly and it was 1 of the best teams I have ever seen. Compare them with todays Brazil who are wank, Neymar is an embarrassment who I doubt would have gotten into that 82 side. They didn't win the World Cup in 82 but they won my heart and with the exception of todays Brazil they always used to be my 2nd team - when England got knocked out support Brazil. 👍

Beckenbauer lost the World Cup as player and a manager, but also won the World Cup as player and a manager. You shouldn’t point out the negative if your not “bothered” to point out the positive.
But you are English after all 🙄

Great educational video as always. Also for the givaway, I'm a Wolfsburg fan! Loved them since 2013 because of Ivan perisic and KDB. The counter attack they had then was mad.

The Magic Square tactic was still employed quite often after 82

I wonder if Argentina will deploy the same tactics of 86 in the next world cup they have to utilise every strength of Messi so it wouldn't be a bad idea, any suggestions.
