The 1970s showed that, tactically, ideas could take football almost anywhere. It was an intoxicating time when the beautiful game truly became just that.

Love this series, but two things that probably got cut but should be mentioned from the 1978 cup: Argentina-Peru game and Cruyff not playing in 1978 are key factors too.

This has been one of the greatest episodes ever made of these. So in-depth and helps build upon knowledge previously gained from other videos.

This was the era when England got left behind (tactically and technically) by the other top nations. We've not managed to bridge the gap since. Not qualifying for the 74 and 78 world cups meant we never got to play against the like of Germany, Brazil and Holland from that era. If we'd played them at a World Cup maybe we'd have been influenced by their approach and not gone down the one dimensional, physical route that characterised English football during the 80's.

What a perfect and brilliant explanation. No doubt, the best YouTube channel regarding football.

Joe's voice is lovely. Combined with that gentle music, I feel like he's telling me a bedtime story!

finally, someone who understands how Italy played in 1970, that Valcareggi did not play a five-man defence...Italy showed plenty of attacking initiative in certain games but, as you say, there were times they showed too much caution...the weakness with the Italian strategy was that their man-marking system was too rigid and Brazil exposed this in the second half with Jairzinho crossing to the left, dragging Facchetti with him...this left a huge gap in the left side which Carlos Alberto moved into...Zagallo also noted they were not marking Gerson in midfield so at half time he told his players to give the ball to Gerson as much as possible...Gerson scored the second and set up the third

Ahh the 70's, all so new, yet so old. Things were interesting back then. Modern Tactics were in the infancy. So many hallmarks we see today are a results of what happened back then.

Argentina did not rely on questionable referring or a violent crowd. They won because their tactics we're superior

Great breakdown. BUT I truly believe the best team in the 1974 World Cup was easily Gorski's White Eagles. The most electric, fast attacking team around. Top scorer Lato. Only for West Germany to play a match that shouldn't have been played in swamp conditions. Beckenbauer himself said the best team by far was Poland and they only won because West Germany were literally kicking the ball from puddle to puddle. Sadly the forgotten wonder team.

Gotta love how british people loves to say that 78's Cup was fixed (yeah, it really was) but says ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the bizarre show that 66's Cup was to give England it's trophy.

(And this is coming from a Brazilian)

This little detail aside, great video as always! Great job!

Great video, as usual! However, I think it's unfortunate that you just brushed on the German side of 74. What were their best qualities? How did they reach the final, despite a massive dispute between players and the DFB before the tournament? Looking forward to Whiteboard Extra.

Such a shame there was a rain in semis in 1974. Poland would have beaten Germany easly, we got the best wings in this WC.

I would love a video dedicated to the 1970 Brazil side

Although the Dutch team played the by far most attractive football in 1974, I think it's bit to giving the german team only 15s of speech. You didn't even show their line-up. That's a bit unfair for maybe the best german team ever.
