Much has been made of the Pentax 17 and the upcoming Rollei 35 AF, but there are 3 other interesting film cameras on the horizon. In this video we will discuss the rebirth of the Widelux film camera coming form Jeff Bridges and Silvergrain classics, the new 35mm point and shoot Nana film camera coming from film never die, and what the next film camera could be from Pentax. There's so much exciting stuff on the horizon. I can't wait to get my hands on all of these lovely film cameras.

Jeff Bridges and his wife are such icons for the camera restoration process.

People think $500 is too much for the Pentax 17 and now they've got a fixed f11, fixed shutter speed point and shoot for $350? Oof. I expect the Widelux to be $2k at least. I don't think the issue with cost and a new Pentax is designing, but manufacturing. Sure they could bring out the old plans and designs for previous cameras but all the tooling and machine work for those parts may or may not be available anymore. I couldnt see them making a modern gr1 for less than $800 probably.

New Widelux: very exciting! I’ll take one!

Fixed lens, fixed f/11, fixed 1/125? Hard pass

New GR1? Lovely! I’ll take 2!

I've sadly heard the Film Never Die camera is just a cheap Alibaba camera repackaged in thin metal.

If a gr film camera came out today, I would buy 3 off the bat. Absolutely the best street photography camera. I’m a Leica shooter and have been for over 15 years. Only cause Ricoh won’t step up the game. If a weather sealed GR digital was out, I would have grabbed it. If they released a film camera that was reliable, it would be amazing. C’mon already!!!

I might sound crazy but I think the pentax 17 is such a cool camera. I can't afford it so I'll just stick with my 40 yr old minolta x-370 😂

The Ricoh GR is probably my dream camera, I've never bought one cause I just can't justify it considering the terrible LCDs, I would go crazy for a new one if it didn't share that problem.

It's very likely that the Nana camera is just a $30 Alibaba reskinned in a metal frame. All components pretty much match its Alibaba counterpart.

Doubt I'll ever afford one. But the Widelux intrigues me based on some of the images I've seen.

Even if I would also much prefer to see a GR-like camera as the hopefully next Pentax FF camera, I think it will be more likely a Pentax 36, very close to the 17. The 17 is almost a 36: double the cutout area in the film chamber, switch the viewfinder, adjust the winding gear, done. The already motorized lens positioning according to the set up distance could shurely be turned into an auto focus.

Marwan El Mozayen, of Silvergrain, was recently on episode 72 of the camerosity podcast to talk about progress of the widelux if you're interested in hearing more

$350 for a fixed lens focus free camera is diabolical

Bessa had a low cost rangefinder that used the Leica M mount for lens! Wish they'd bring that back!!!

I wish I could use my star power to help develop new film cameras.

I fell in love seeing the Pentax, even when I heard the price I was like “oh well… sacrifices can be made”. When I heard it was half frame I was expectativas… but then when I saw it was vertical… meh.

Like I love shooting vertical especially in small spaces, but in my head that is going to feel so weird… 😵‍💫

$350 for a camera with a permanent f11 and one shutter speed? I can't fathom the thought process behind that.

I think if more people show interest in the widelux, maybe more panoramic film cameras could be made :D

I love my GR1 but I would absolutely buy a new GR film camera, especially if it came with a little fast 40 on it.

My vote is for the GR1v. I borrowed one in the early 2000s, put 2 rolls of B&W through it and always remembered its image quality and simplicity.
I couldn't afford one at the time and by the time I could, they were not available new. In 2012 I was able to buy a new Fujifilm Klasse W directly from Japan. I think they had just gone out of production. These are similar to the Ricoh GR1v in spec. but with more optional manual controls and a more upmarket look. Stunning image quality, even a little better than the GR1v.
A new Pentax made GR1v would be expensive today.

Definitely the GR, but the widelux is intriguing. 😸
