How To Escape A Flooding Vehicle

If you're ever in a car accident that results in the car sinking, you only have seconds to react and save your life. Here's what to do.

Reaction time and speed are key for survival. A sinking car will not immediately submerge, which means there’s a small window of opportunity to act.

Don’t try to open the door. Water pressure makes this extremely difficult to do. And even if you could open the door, this would allow more water to come in and make y our car sink faster. Instead, quickly roll down your side window, unbuckle yourself, and climb out. If you were too slow to react, the water pressure could pin your doors and windows shut. That means you'll have to break a window. Don’t try the car’s front windshield as it’s built to resist impacts. Instead, go for the side windows. Use your foot and kick at the top of the window or remove the headrest from your seat and jam it where the window meets the door.

You can also use a glass breaking tool like ResQMe to quickly break the window. It can easily be stored in the glove compartment or on your keychain. If the car is upside down and your seatbelt is locking you in, the tool can even cut you free.

After breaking the window, immediately take a deep breath of air and swim out through the rushing water toward safety.

As a parent, practice pivoting round and unbuckling kids (or cutting seat belts) from the driver and passenger seats and go through the actions of pulling them up front with you, they’ll be going out the window you are going out… You should have a rescue tool located on both passenger and driver sides of your Vehicle… 😎👍🏻

There is a limit to what a person can buy, and store in the car. In your car do you put traffic cones, a first aid kit, a snake bite kit, flares, a tire repair kit, a tire pump, a knife, a floatation device, and now something to break windows? I have opted for none of those.

2 days ago, a couple drove a car in pouring storm to cross a under bridge tunnel, without knowing the water in front of them was 1.8m deep. Their car engine died soon after. Rumor said they didn't or couldn't open the door, instead they called the insurance company and talked 20 minutes. After rescued an hour later, they both were dead

The only problem is that when this event happen it is not like you're driving down a boat ramp at 5 mph every time.
Most likely it's been a crash with a road barrier, down a bridge, canal, lake.. All what includes a second impact upon water entry. By that time, your response time is less than optimal and we can't account for panic response yet! Although it never hurts to be prepared and knows what to do just in case. But don't sweat it, only god knows what's in store for you!

A windshield is NOT designed to resist impact from the inside. It's easy to break from the inside. I would think it would be the best bet as it provides more room for a larger person to get out. 1st things 1st get everybody from the back seats into the front seat and prepared to move fast out the windshield.
