This is a great explanation for first time manual drivers! I would add that after you have this concept figured out, take the time to learn your car and the way it drives and the way it feels. Rev matching will become second nature with practice and understanding your car.

I don’t even pay attention to the revs that much anymore, just blip the throttle and let the clutch out slow until I feel it catch

Downshifting from 6-5-4-3 is easy tbh. Hardest for me to ever get a perfect downshift is 3rd to 2nd, because like if im on 3rd gear going 30mph if i want to downshift to 2nd to make a sharp turn, i have to catch it 3k rpm at very least on my car to do it correctly and when im about to make that turn, it gives me anxiety because im rushing to downshift to 2nd and i know ill fuck it up.

After you get used to the bite point you just blip the trottle and hold the clutch until the revs match up because some cars (like my mk6 gti) drop the revs super fast after you lift the clutch so you have to hold the clutch and wait for the revs to stabilize if not the car will jolt.

I find it easier to just think about how much i have to go up in rpm. This is just a graph that you can visualize in ur head where the higher your rpm, the more you’re gonna have to go up, and the lower your gear, the more you’re gonna have to go up. Then say i’m in 5th gear going to 4th at low rpm i know my blip doesn’t have to be super strong, probably only a 200 rpm difference if im really low in the rpm to start off. But If im at high rpm in any year i know that blip is gonna be bigger. If im in a low gear I know that blip is gonna be bigger. I think its better to memorize stuff in a sliding scale like this cause always having to look at your speed and shit isn’t practical

I’ve never looked at the rpms I just go off feel because having to remember what revs you need to be at for every gear at various speeds and rpms is annoying. If you over blip or under blip just use clutch control to smooth it out.

Weird I drive a 2003 Jetta Manual and I when I down shift I just let my foot of the gas pedal let the car slow on its own and clutch in and drop to the lower gear easily! I don’t even use the clutch sometimes I just know when to shift at the exact moment I hear my engine wanting to shift!

Oh I see I never owned a manual but this makes since so all u gotta do is just get it up to 2k rpm’s then clutch in downshift then blip the throttle and clutch out slowly to make it smooth transition to downshift seems pretty easy
