I should have mentioned in the video, I'm running Bridgestone Blizzak's on my winter wheels and Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 on my summer wheels.

I work in a tire shop in Michigan and I can back everything you say about run flats. Something to consider, run flats don’t absorb impact the same. Seems like every bmw or Mercedes we perform a balance on, the wheels are out of round to some extent and no longer ride smoothly. Seems like the force of a pothole goes right to the wheels and suspension.

Hey Justin thanks for the video. Just looked at a used X3 that had replacement tires that were not run flat so was looking for alternatives. Just a word of caution to all, if you are not going with the run flat tires DO have a plan. Here is a weird but true story - I have a 40+ mile commute that is mostly on rural interstate in Wisconsin, one cold (-10 F) winter night I was headed home at about 7:00 PM when overtook a car that was billowing smoke, the driver was going 65 MPH on a flat tire and from the looks of it had been for awhile - apparently hell bent on getting someplace to get help. They showed no intention of stopping and I couldn't help them while they were going 65 down the interstate so I continued on my way thinking "damn I sure wouldn't want to deal with a flat tire on a night like this". Drove the final 30 miles home, pulled into my garage, got out and was walking around the back of my truck when I hear coming from the the right rear, within a minute the tire was completely flat and I proceeded to change it in the comfort of my heated garage. Moral of the story: have a plan because you just never know. Oh, one more thing, you could have a long wait for roadside assistance in rural areas, especially when it is at night and -10, always keep that gas tank at least half full.

Run flats give me confidence when I’m driving in desolate areas. Owned BMWs for 20 plus years. I have a sense of security riding on them.

I have been driving for 40 years I have had a few flats but I have never had a catastrophic tire failure on regular tires. I bought a used bmw and in 4 months I "broke" 3 run flat tires. Switched over to regular tires -no problems. Everyone I have talked to who has rft seems to get flats at least once or twice a year. Thanks for the idea about carrying a pump with me.

Spot on as usual Justin. I replaced my factory run flats with Continental Extreme Contacts on my X5 and could not be more pleased with the quieter, smoother ride and cost savings! Not sure you recommend it, but I have a can of that 'fixaflat' foam in my trunk as my flat tire repair solution. Thanks for another useful BMW video.

I got rid of my run flats in jan 2017, and never looked back, the ride was a night and day difference, the steering wasn't feeling heavy, and it was just a pleasure to drive. I keep a tyre repair kit and the BMW air compressor in my car as I run a staggered wheel setup and i use the trunk / boot all the time for work purposes... great video brother 🙏🏼 have a great day 👌🏼

Justin I've changed from run flats to normal tyres about 12 months ago after owning my 3 series lci over 4 years.I can honestly say I 100% agree with you, The drive and feel of the car is much softer and in my opinion better grip in the corners because of the softer walls that allow a little flex.Anyway I've simply added a space saver (spare tyre)which is really thin and hardly takes up any room. This in my opinion was the best option as just like runflats once fitted you can only drive around 50mph yet continue your journey.

when changing standard tires, you MUST use XL rated, BMW's with RFT's, have stiffer suspension, to deal with the stiffer sidewall, so to keep a better road feel you need XL's

I used run-flat tires on my BMWs for 12 years, and they saved my days a few times. I would not ever think of using standard tyres. When used on decent quality roads, and if you like 'feel of the road' - don't even think of going to standard ones. You will safe some money, but if you get a puncture on the in the middle of motorway - you will appreciate the greatness of Run-Flat tires. Not sure the point of these videos at all

The production quality on your videos is some of the best around. I wonder how many of your viewers don't even have a BMW (myself included)

Got rid of mine the first week I bought my mini. Have the tire repair kit and air compressor just in case. I live in the northeast so plenty of options for help if I can’t repair the flat. Well worth it, car handles much better!

Nice video, Justin! I'm with you. We bought a 335 with run-flats on it. I immediately changed to Continental Extreme Contacts, because I have really liked them on my Mustang GT500. Immediate improvement for the Bimmer! Quieter, smoother, handles better. We NEVER get flat tires and have roadside assistance. Nevertheless I also have a repair kit and air compressor just in case.

Everyone talks bad about rft, but I just purchased a 2019 540i xdrive with Msport and they seem very good to me. It's my 1st BMW so I don't have anything to compare it too (except my 2016 Maxima). The ride is smooth and quiet to me.

My Toyota Sienna is still on RFT's ( 7 years ); changed once and it's time again and it's so pricey. I was confused whether to go for RFT's again or to go with standard tires. This video gave more confidence to switch to standard tires. Thanks Justn, for this video!

I can attest to this. Recently needed to change my Pirelli P. Zero RFT's on the rear and the price of them was going to cost 470 EUR for two 255/40/R17's. The guys recommended I change all of the tires to standard tires which costed me the exact same as two RFT's which for me was a no brainer. The fronts were 225/45/R17's which I also changed to standard tires. The steering is lighter and more comfortable to turn and maneuver (you can still feel the road really well !) and the difference in ride quality is night and day ! I do town driving as I live on a small island and the roads are quite bad and this was a major upgrade for me !

Tnx 4 video! But I prefer run-flat. This technology helped me lots of times. My life-hacks: little lower air pressure, smaller the radius (16” on 1er, 17” on x3, 18” on 5er). Frankly speaking modern run-flat tires are very comfortable compared with those that produced 10 years ago. Also modern suspensions are better adopted to run-flat. I have plenty of comfort on 5 series g30 with 18” rft tires. But i’m sured that your experience is a quite valuable for 10+ years old bmw’s.

I gotta admit I have always been, and will continue to be, tempted by the idea of replacing my rft with regular tyres. But the thought of my wife and kids being stranded by the roadside along a busy motorway is the single most compelling reason why I am still keeping the rft.
