One cold morning on my way to work I got into my bmw and after starting it I got that tire pressure warning light. I got out the car and went to the tire it was pointing to and saw it was lower than the rest and was obviously flat. I got back into the car and drove about 5 miles to work without even thinking about the tire. After work I drove the car to a tire shop to have them fix the flat and 10 mins later I was on my way. Run flats will cost more but the convenience is priceless.

This is a very blinkered view of runflats. Yes 'go flat' tyre will be a little cheaper and have better ride/grip characteristics BUT for the majority of non-enthusiast drivers RFTs are perfectly fine. Also, being stranded on the side of the A1 trying to change a punctured Michelin Pilot Sport or whatever on a winter's night in the pouring rain with cars and lorries belting past inches away from you at 60-70mph is a distinct safety disadvantage.

When I bought my Lexus, first think in my mind is to put run flats on it. I did it and was very happy. I drove 45k miles on my 2019 Lexus 450h on my run flat. time to change for 2nd set of four. I have 5 flats during 45k males. its saves me time(never late to work, meeting ), saves me money(never replace tire after puncture), saves my life(never stoped on road that cars passing by me at 70miles per hour). Yes I pay for run flats $400 more than regular tires. but you can't by life for $400.

Run flat tyres are only of benefit to car companies. I have had run flats on BMW's for a while you will be lucky to get 15 miles out of them flat especially lower priced ones they get shredded. and if you have a flat tyre at midnight ? good luck with that. I suggest use run flats between 8am and 6pm when garages are open.

I got an E82 2010 but it only has 28km, this is on my list for weight savings & make the ride less teeth shattering. Car has the original tires but it's mint! Didn't even have rock chips till I took it on the Autobahn & did 250kph

Bought my Z4 just 3 weeks ago. Broke a rear wheel last week when I caught a pot hole because the run flat tyres just don't absorb any of the impact. Replaced the Potenzas for Yokohama and the difference is staggering.

I use the interstate every day to go to work round trip about 30 miles I rather keep my run-flats so I won't be in a panic situation waiting for tow truck with limited options and trying not to be late and save my rim from damage. If you don't mine the embarrassment and the risk of getting out your car no matter what the surroundings are assuming your on a dark backroad and you don't mind handling the situation go without the run-flats.

Before you make that claim, give the Pilot Super Sport ZP a try, same tire same grip, same tread wear, but a blow out wont stop your day

Personally I'm considering moving away from run-flats. My previous E36 had 1 flat tyre in over 400K kms, my other cars had only 1 in over a total of 600K kms (= 2 flat tyres in 1M kms). My current X1 is getting around 40% of the mileage from run flats and it's driving me mad. I've been lucky admittedly with punctures driving all over Australia, but for me run flats are a very expensive "insurance" over a minor inconvenience. Not sure how I feel however, driving on standard tyres without a spare... A puncture repair kit could save me if needed.

I have run flats on mine but get them cheap almost 70% off due to working for a premium tyre company so quite lucky there but I do agree the ride is harder

The new runflats are really good. I got some bridgestone S001's and they ride just the same as non runflats. Its more about the brand and tyre quality than RFT or not.

Nice one appreciate the effort you put into it,

I thought the same a few years back but it's not the case anymore. Buy some decent RFTs and you won't feel the difference. I bought Michelin PS4 rft and they feel better than normal PS4 on my F10.

Theres arguments on both sides of the coin for runflats, if you doing lots of mileage on motorways there great not so much on A or B roads.Ive swapped out premium brands on an E60 because the car did less than 3k a year, but now on my f10 ive got virtually new primacy 3 runflats so ive little choice but the convienient side of them with puntures are very beneficial.

Run flats suck, scrapped after hitting a pothole. Every time I go int to the BMW garage I am replacing 2/3 tyres. The most expensive thing about BMW ownership.

Run flats are convenient. You said run flats are more expensive, which they are, and then replaced all four for no reason!

Hey BMW guy I have the same model car as you. What is the best tyre pressure for the best fuel economy for driving long distances? I can’t seem to find it!!

I have the same rims as you and got quotes near £1000 to replace the runflats for more runflats. Screw that. What tyres did you go with after. I have an msport with 245/35zr18 back and 215/40r18 runflats. But reading forums to try and find the right size and brand regular tyres to change to is a nightmare with everyone contradicting each other.
