To runflat or not to runflat.. that is the question.

In this video, we'll talk a little about why we made the jump to a traditional tire.

Where I live I need the RunFlat tires. Cartel gangs throw some kind of spikes in the road. I already caught two of them, and I am able to keep driving without stopping in a bad/no light spot.

I took the Conti runflats off my F30 M-Sport and replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and a couple of roadside repair kits and it's the best move I ever made. The ride is so much better and the handling is much more predictable, with even a tiny bit of dampness on the road with the Contis the back end would skip out every time you pushed it hard into a corner. My logic is why have a compromised ride 99% of the time just for the 1% of the time you may have a problem.

I changed my run flats as well and like you mentioned, the ride quality was like Day-Night. I just bought a repair kit and that's it. I'm not returning to run flats. Keep doing your videos.

Virtually every commenter talks about wear and tear or repair kits or uncomfortable ride.

Try a blowout at 80mph with a standard tyre. I've had two. In both cases the tyre disintegrated and took me off the road. I also tow a van and that would be disastrous. A repair kit isn't going to fix that. It isn't going to repair YOU either. I've just bought a new X5 and changed the 19" standard rims and tyres to 20" inch rims with runflats. Believe me, you'll know why the day you suffer a real blowout....not a puncture. Oh, and the ride quality is superb.

I went from runflats on 16 inches to 18 on traditional tyres and the ride is muuuuch smoother, glad I did it.

Definitely with you on this. I have an F01 740d, which I took in to have the alloys fixed (curb marks). The guys swapped mine out with a set of loan wheels and alloys. As I was driving home I noticed that the car felt completely different on the road, incredibly soft and quiet ride, different handling, etc. Arrived home and realised that it was a set of non-run-flats that was fitted. When I got my car back, it was the first thing that got changed. No more run-flats! Like others mentioned, a couple of repair kits in the car and that’s it. When they were repairing the curb marks, they advised that all the alloys had a buckle on them too. This is caused by the run-flats when you hit something hard on the road.

Just got my new M440i with run flats, guess I'll stay with these for a bit. Thanks for the useful info...ALOHA!

I have the BMW X6, V8 2015 and it comes with runfalts and a spare tire. I suffered a lot from the stiffness, loud sound, vibration, can't be repaired, very expensive & heavy. I just replaced them with regular Michelin sport tires and now it feels like a totally deferent car, it rides very smooth without any vibration and the grip is much better. One thing is for sure that I'll never ever go back to run flats again.
Thanks for the video.

Exactly the same happened to me. Once my 5 series and X3m my wife's car switched to non RFT - we never come back. Driving feelings and responsivnes - difference so huge

My 2014 X50i came with Bridgestone RFTs and, although they still have tread after 65Kmi, the ride is really harsh. Hit a pothole that took out the sidewall in one of the fronts and switched the pair to Michelin PS3+. Love them and will change the rears soon. I have the staggered setup.

Thanks for clarifying, Bryan. I have a 328i with 18" wheels and the dealership is saying I should get new tires but I don't want the same tires because they are loud. I've heard that run flats tend to be noisier tires when driven and I also noticed they are, like you said, harsh on the smallest of holes. If you ever drive behind me you'd notice I try and avoid every little thing and I don't feel like I should do that now that I know it's because of the tires. I'm definitely thinking I should get a set of normal tires with a spare and call it a day.

I switched to non run flats yesterday, man its so much smoother, since my old car has the same exact tire size as my current car i took the spare from the old car b4 i sold it

Appreciate your views and will take your advice onboard.  Have a E60 530i and currently with Rf's she tram lines really badly plus the ride is worse than my previous E39.  Guess I now know why !

Just replaced my run flats with regular tires; had '17 wheels and actually went down to '16 inch new wheels. BMW 328i convertible. Wow, what a difference. So smooth.

Run flats ride like garbage. After about 30k miles the outside edges had lost all tread because the sidewalls were so stiff. I replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+ on the wife's F30 and it's night and day. Just keep a plug kit in the rear, just in case

Thanks Bryan, great video. I have a 2016 640D Gran Coupe on 20in run flats and I intend getting conventional tyres on it shortly. It tramlines and the ride is really harsh, hopefully I’ll have the same result you did 🤞🏻👍

Had a flat on my stock run flats. Cost of two replacements was similar to going to four traditional tires. Having a AAA membership and it being a daily driver to and from work, it was a no-brainer. Add in the ride quality being night and day, and I'd never consider going back to run flats. It seems like a common practice now to go to run flats to not have to have to have room for a spare (either full size or a donut).

As soon as my MSport F30 punctured the factory pirelli runflats, I swapped them out for non-runflat Michelin pilot sport as/3s. They’re cheaper, you can patch them, and they have better drive quality and offer less road noise and not as stiff of a ride.

I ditched my RFTs for a UHP all season and the car drives like night and day. Good choice all around.

so do you keep a spare tire in the trunk? I wish BMW would stop using run flats
