A car's exhaust system plays a major role in controlling the hot gases exiting the motor. Like a musical instrument in the hands of a master musician, systems are tuned to the characteristics of a particular engine. Two of the most popular manufacturers are Flowmaster and Magnaflow. Both brands started in California and are similar to one another in their pursuit of higher flow, better durability and amazing performance tone. But each relies on completely different approaches to achieve the same results.

Flowmaster Exhaust Systems
The Benefits of a Flowmaster Exhaust System
Flowmaster is legendary among hotrod purists and muscle car maniacs for rugged construction and powerful, race-inspired tones. Homegrown with pride, Flowmaster exhaust systems are made right here in the United States from mandrel bent, aluminized or stainless steel tubing. Their Flowmaster American Thunder exhausts and the Flowmaster Force II system use battle-tested chambered mufflers to maximize, you guessed it...the flow.

Removing the racket, highly engineered baffles cancel excessive noise by bouncing sound waves into each other. As if that's not enough, an area of low pressure is created inside of the muffler to scavenge more exhaust from the cylinders. What does this mean to you? It's locomotive power that doesn't anger the neighbors while they make breakfast. What's more, each muffler has staying power to match. With no packing to blow out over time, that amazing performance sound lasts the life of your vehicle. Best of all, each kit is custom made for an easy installation.

Magnaflow Exhaust Systems
The Benefits of a Magnaflow Exhaust System
Magnaflow is quickly becoming the system of choice for a smooth, aggressive rumble and low interior resonance. Quality, power and great sound are the objectives and Magnaflow has accomplished the mission with their exhaust systems. Proving that the underside of your car can look great too, most Magnaflow cat-back systems are composed entirely of stainless steel, with polished muffler cases. And don't worry—there is plenty of zing to match the bling.

Straight to the point, Magnaflow mufflers feature a straight-through design for unimpeded exhaust flow through perforated tubing. Keeping their reputation untarnished even on the inside, each muffler is packed with stainless steel wool, far outlasting the fiberglass used to pack lesser mufflers. Magnaflow exhaust systems also magnify flow with mandrel bent tubing, further increasing horsepower and torque. Only have a driveway to work with? No problem! Magnaflow kits bolt up in a snap with stainless steel hardware and no modifications using the factory exhaust hanger.
What's the Right Performance Exhaust System for You?
When it comes to performance, Flowmaster and Magnaflow have really done their homework. With a ton of great features to add a heartbeat to your ride, both options are a huge upgrade over your factory exhaust system. Getting exhausted from trying to decide on which kit to choose? I’ve always preferred performance over decibels. Magnaflow since day one for me.

Flowmasters don't flow well at all because of all those chambers and baffles. They're designed to tune your exhaust note...but to me, Flowmasters have an annoying hollow-metal box sound. Straight-through design is the way to go. Magnaflow for the win.

I got a 5.7 hemi, 3inch pipe with a magnaflow. Sound great, took a while to break in but has a deep tone to it. I find flow masters to sound loud and crackly.

Takes about 6-9 mos before the Magnaflow starts sounding like you not driving with your purse!

magnaflow sounds great on the 2500HD 6.0L,   sick deep tone sound.  3inch dual to single 4 inch..  I think I depends if your truck has dual pipe to the muffler

The first statement in your last paragraph is false. Flowmaster has not done their homework. I had dual 50 series on a motorhome. I installed a new exhaust with Flowmaster dual 70 series. My mileage took a nose dive - about 20% loss. My zero to 60 was terrible. I made several calls to their tech line who made all kinds of stupid suggestions. Yes, I tried leaning the mixture and richening the mixture. I put 2 inch adaptor on to provide additional back pressure. Nothing helped. I finally pulled the mufflers and installed Magnaflow. My zero to 60 time decreased by around 2 seconds more than with the 50 series, my mileage went up to slightly better than the original 50 series. Better yet, the Magnaflows were QUIETER than the 70 series. Let the evidence show Flowmaster has no idea what they are doing. That was about 6 years ago and I'm still very pleased with the Magnaflows. I've since dropped in a MPFI 502 and a 4L85e. Still running the same exhaust - Thorleys and Magnaflows.

Good video.  Had a Magnaflow installed at this shop awhile back by Al in California.  Great exhaust and installation.  Long time Al...

Had Flowmaster 40's on my 12 Charger R/T. Tone was good but not nearly loud enough. Switched out to (2) 11" Flowmaster Outlaw Race mufflers (straight through design). Absolutely love the sound!

Nice vidieo, the only thing I would ad is that not all Flowmasters are stainless. the ones that are, are twice the price of the Magnaflow. I'm having to take a rusted out Flowmaster off after 2 1/2 years of Michigan winters. Putting a Stainless Magnaflow on we'll see in a couple years if it fairs any better.

Hi Guys, Not sure if you're catching new comments. I'm in Rocklin and taking delivery in a couple weeks on a 72 Base 350 T-Top Corvette, 100% stock low miles. I want to go with some sweet ceramic headers, and either Magnaflows or Flowmasters. I'm looking for performance 1st, great sound 2nd, and as little drone as possible 3rd. Not too many motor improvements down the road, I may do none, or I might do a perf high rise manifold and cam similar to what LT-1 has, and possible swap of the carb for FI but that's TBD maybe nothing besides headers/exhaust. I'll call when I get into town. Thoughts? -Tim

good video - straight to the point ! I changed from a MF to a FM Super 44 on my XJ 4.0, love the deep-rough-raw-raucous tone - on top, a proven increase of hp with the FM compared to the MF !

I hv flowmaster on an 02 z71 runs straight out the back and its sounds smooth. Then the pipes rusted off at the output right at the muffler [big als muffler shop] and it is loud. 65 mph with cruise control on the hwy with the radio on and the droning sound sounds like I hv a generator running at low speed in the bed of the truck. Loud exhaust sounds cool until you hv to sit with it droning a constant level for 45 minutes when you drive to work. I can't turn the radio up loud enough and still not hear the droning sound in the background. for 45 minutes. My co-workers think it sounds tough when I pull out of the parking lot hitting all the gears but at hwy cruising it sux. can't get the pipes re-welded back up fast enough for me. Sounds a lot better with the sound coming out the pipes way back behind the back bumper. Muffler shop guy had a cut away of the magnaflow and flowmaster...the magnaflow is all stainless so it should last longer.

So...magnaflow basically is a muffler/resonater?

I went Delta 50 and used Vibrant ultra-quiet resonators to take that crackle out. I wish I knew sooner that the 50 has a horrible drone “as is” from 1200 to 2100 RPMs where you want to cruise a reasonable speed limit or climb a hill 😂
