If the police come knocking and ask for your security camera footage, most lawyers will advise you to NEVER give consent. Why? First and foremost, it's your right to say no. Let the cops get a warrant for it!

Second, police don't always just look at the timestamps of an incident, they look at other days. Are you always the perfect citizen on your cameras? Don't let the cops get evidence of you being less than perfect.

This is why you always video record every encounter with police. To keep them honest while their pressuring you to be honest. Some still can't be, knowing your recording.

If a cop knocks on your door, don't open the door. Ask what they need. If they want to talk to you, they can talk to you through the door. The reason for that is because the cop can force their way in or they can put their foot in the door the moment you open that door.

Second, always read the warrant and don't be surprised if that supposed warrant has nothing to do with your property. A lot of times cops carry old warrants in the hopes that you will not look at it or read it and those warrants have nothing to do with you or your property.

Right! What cop is gonna let you " read the warrant" ? Hardly! They will yell and say " you are obstructing justice, turn around, you are under arrest".

Don't talk to them. Before you EVER open the door, you should know who is out there. Don't open the door. Unless they DO have a warrant.

Reading over the warrant sounds good and looks wonderful on paper, but in the real world if a Badge Bully has a warrant, they MIGHT hand you the warrant as they are shoving you aside (assuming they don't put you in cuffs for Officer Safety) and then seize your computer and/or security system l.

Usually I agree but if the footage would help solve a crime in progress or just happened to a neighbor and you refuse to help it makes you a pretty poor neighbor.
I have had occasion to tell the police I had video and prevented an innocent person from getting a ticket.
