DISCLAIMER (Of course, I'd have one 😁)
Hey, you might think that this info makes me your lawyer, but it doesn’t and I’m not. Sorry, but I AM NOT YOUR LAWYER unless we have an engagement agreement. I am just providing public information here, like a library does, and am not providing you with legal advice about your situation. So, it would be totally unreasonable for you to conclude we have an attorney-client relationship just because you're viewing this information.

Best simple explanation I've heard:

A defense attorney doesn't care if you're innocent because their job isn't to prove your innocence; it's to force the state to prove your guilt.

Also, a great defense attorney is a boon for a prosecutor. Why? Because a great defense attorney whose client is found guilty won't have very much ground for an appeal, since every stone was already overturned.

A public defender taught a night class at my college as a side gig. She explained her defense of “bad people” this way: she is there to hold the police accountable. If they do their jobs right, collecting real evidence in the right way, then the person will go to jail. But if the cops get lazy, can’t provide enough evidence, or cut corners to get what evidence they have, then criminal defense lawyers help ensure that the police are held accountable, regardless of how they feel about their client. If the defense lawyer slacks or just decides somebody isn’t worth defending, then cops learn it’s okay to be sloppy and innocent people get hurt.

People get very angry seeing a lawyer defend someone who's done a disgusting crime. But they don't consider that it's their job to defend ANYONE who is their client.

That last part is why I was told that you should never tell your lawyer anything they don't ask for.

If you tell them you're guilty, then they can't just let you go onto the stand and tell everyone you aren't.

People often forget that there's WAY more to a trial than "guilty or not guilty", even if guilty on all charges, even if you truned yourself in. They still have to make sure that you're judged fairly and in accordance with the law.

I once heard someone explain that it's easier when the lawyer knows full well that their client is guilty, because then they can focus on the facts.

I've had a lawyer tell me to plead guilty or talk to the police. When I said neither sounded good he said he had no ideas. I convinced him to argue that the stop was illegal due to the officer claiming that he pulled me over for a suspended license even though it was my parent's vehicle, my name was not on the vehicle or insurance, and I had never been pulled over in the vehicle before. They threw the case out.

And this is why I can't be a lawyer. I'd have a hard time representing a person who I believe is guilty. I admire those that can to keep the system working fairly

This is why there often is a shortage of public defenders. Some people can't wrap their brain around the fact that, in our legal system, even the guilty need to be defended. And because of that sometimes guilty people get off free.

I admire lawyers because of this. Life would be better if everyone understood psychology and logic much like lawyers are trained to do.

There's another aspect to consider. Even if the client is guilty, a good defence lawyer would try to ensure that the client doesn't receive the maximum punishment as dictated by sentencing guidelines.
