Smoking is bad for you, but the reason I care is because it’s bad for Spine surgery! Spine surgery is pretty safe when you follow all of the rules and the patient is optimized. Sometimes in the trauma setting, the surgeon doesn’t have the choice to wait for optimal conditions. Allow me to educate why smoking is a big deal and spine surgery!

I didn’t care about my lungs, I could run a 5 minute mile after smoking a pack… what I didn’t know is that it effected the spine so badly, now I’m in horrible pain. But it’s because we have these “masculinity influencers” telling young men that nicotine boosts testosterone 🤦‍♂️
