I had a close encounter with one of these creatures at the zoo once . It was so gentle and when it touched you all you felt was kindness. It hugged me, I hugged him back. It was amazing.

The second pictured Orangutan, his name was Adak. He walked the trail between the klotok dock and the sanctuary buildings in Borneo. Seemingly guiding tourists to leave. Always a gentleman, he would grab the hand of "pretty girls" and try to pull them for an off trail walk - a date. Handlers were close by to discourage him with a fruit trade. He even climbed aboard vessels at the dock to poke around and rest. RIP Adak.

The Singapore Zoo used to have an Orangutan called Ah Meng. She was so gentle and social that the Zookeepers would bring her to the restaurant to eat breakfast and take photos with visitors. She was 48 years old when she died. RIP Ah Meng.

Back about 20 years ago, I went to the Omaha zoo. An orangutan had just given birth. We heard about this, but thought she would be in the back, away from the people. When we came by the orangutans, she was laying near the glass, but facing away from us. As we got beside her she saw us and rolled over and propped up her newborn baby for us to.see. The way she did it was much like a human would do. It really was a gift to me. You could see her joy in sharing with us. So sweet. You could also tell she saw our joy in it too. Wouldn't it be neat if someday, they lived amoung us like dogs and cats do today?

They normally don't pose a threat, just don't bully them and you'll be fine

I held the hand of a male orangutan in Borneo and he was so gentle yet I could feel his strength. I knew I could not let go until he decided he wanted to let go. I also held a baby orangutan that Peed on me which was fine with me. It was just like a little human being baby. Such a wonderful experience.
