How to represent a relationship with a simple equation | Linear equations | Algebra I | Khan Academy

Equations are about relationships (no, not girlfriends and boyfriends!) between the two sides of the equation. Let's again use a scale example to help us understand.

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. How long did it take to draw those scales?

Huh??? The scale is exactly balanced, so why is the equation not ?+3=10, 3+x=10 or 3+8=10? There's no reason at all to do any subtraction to do what Sal is asking for. I must be missing something here. If the two sides are equal then how can ?+3=10 NOT be the answer? I'm so confused.
