Equations are about relationships (no, not girlfriends and boyfriends!) between the two sides of the equation. Let's again use a scale example to help us understand.

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

My gosh! I'm 10 seconds in and ALREADY you're presenting something I was going to do a video similar too! Very basic stuff to help kids gain intuition about it! Sal, it's a lot better to DO things than to THINK ABOUT doing things! You're doing great stuff.

How long did it take to draw those scales?

Huh??? The scale is exactly balanced, so why is the equation not ?+3=10, 3+x=10 or 3+8=10? There's no reason at all to do any subtraction to do what Sal is asking for. I must be missing something here. If the two sides are equal then how can ?+3=10 NOT be the answer? I'm so confused.

I know it's irrelevant to the video, but the perspective on the scale is bugging me... >.<

This is not a bad drawing, the scale is welded to an invisible tilted surface.

I literally copied and pasted this link from khan academy to say that IT TAKES FIVE SECONDS TO FIND THE ANSWER.
