Butterfly Technique

Swimming butterfly is one of the best cardiovascular exercises that you can take part in if swum effectively and efficiently, otherwise, it tends to be a very anaerobic stroke for beginners and intermediates due to the efforts levels required. In general, swimming not only increases your lung capacity, but it improves the ability of your heart to pump blood around your body.

This is the case even if you swim as little as once a week. However, many swimmers tend to get stuck in a rut and fail to improve their technique. This means that the body gets used to the workload being asked of it and you stop improving your fitness. A good tip is to switch to a more demanding stroke, such as the butterfly. Even if you swim butterfly regularly, there are plenty of tips you can learn which will improve your technique, helping you to master it.

I recently started swim for a local swim team and practice is cancelled till the spring because of the virus. I don’t have a pool and I always want to practice I keep forgetting everything 😂 I keep watching these videos again and again thank you!

I used to swim 2.5 to 3 km butterfly a day in the sea, non stop. I spent almost 4 years not swimming and in my first week at the pools, I can manage 4 sets of 250 meters after a 1000 meter freestyle warm up. I hope to get back my endurance and power in a few months. I love butterfly, It feels amazing when you get into the flow. You feel like a fish 🙂

If I try to do the butterfly style, the lifeguard will think that I'm drowning and jump into the water to rescue me! You can only fully appreciate it when you actually watch someone do it in real life - it is absolutely gorgeous!

“Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to butterfly.”
Have you seen Micheal Phelps swim?

Thank You for you clear and detailed explanation, Aimee Willmott! I especially liked the demonstration of the movement of the arms in the video starting 1:24 and also 1:53. These past few months, I have become comfortable with the breaststroke and these past few weeks (since around the last week of June) with the freestyle. I now hope to get started on the butterfly in the coming weeks.

Thanx SS, you're making me aware of two redundant mistakes I used to do, my ondulation was forceful and deep, and the arms position during the pull phase was wrong, I need to rethink it now. Full mark SS
