I found it both annoying and amusing that the hair world did an absolute 180° fated decades of consensus because of that one study, before it was replicated or confirmed. And whenever someone said "your hair gets damaged so much more when it's wet and you move it!" I was just like, i don't? No one really does? Do they expect us to be headbanging and wiping the floors with our hair? Yeah, it proves you shouldn't sleep in wet hair, but in a realistic setting when someone is just sitting there letting their hair air dry after patting it with a towel, their hair isn't going to fall off. I also find it interesting how there's absolutely no nuance in this conversation - no one mentions partially blowdrying it, or even hair texture, etc

just want to say I really appreciate your straightforward, evidence-based approach that addresses all the flawed "logic" and nonsense that gets posted - thank you!

I think it’s important to understand that there is a difference between what’s gentle on a person’s hair and what produces the desired aesthetic result. Not only does air drying take (for me) about five hours it produces a style that is stringy and flat. Towel drying produces frizz and breakage. Low-temp blow drying takes nearly an hour. Hi temp drying, which I do about twice a week, takes about 30 minutes and produces beautiful results. For me, this is more relevant than the “health” of my hair.

AS some one has thick hair live in humid hot weather. Air dry makes my oily scalp oilier faster. Blow dry with low heat best for my hair

I don't blow dry often and have 3ft of hair so i think you will be fine as long as you don't put it in a tight hairstyle or use elastics. Thb stopping with the use of elastics did the most for hair health out of everything i tried over the years. That and not getting stressed over writing my final thesis🥸 my skin and hair did not like my thesis stress at all

The curlier the hair, the more important hair hydration is, right? How do we properly hydrate our hair?

the conclusion i’ve come to personally, is that it heavily depends on the person. for me gentle heat blow dry is healthier than air drying, because my hair is high porosity. If i air dry it it usually takes 5-8 hours to dry, and leaving your hair wet for for more than a couple hours leaves it more vulnerable to breakage and damage. I use a heat protectant before hand, and another heat protectant oil after 70% or so of my hair is dried.

A good study would be appreciated. I wish they would also look at diffusers. Those seem better than blowdryers.

Is there any ingredients to look for heat protection? some products just list it to their claims but it doesnt prptect thermal heat at all

I leave a towel on my hair for an hour (no rubbing) to soak the water out (my hair is quite thick so I give it the hour), then I just let it air dry after spray in conditioner and oil. I rarely use heat on my hair. Air feels nicer.

That video propelled a lot of videos from hairstylists and hair companies replicate your opinions.sad that they don't reference you

I suck at blow drying. Definitely more damaging when I do it. Gets all tangled and ripped out. 😅 I leave it to the professionals when I get my hair trimmed at a salon once or twice a year. A special treat.

I think it simply depends kind of like you said: if you have time to air dry before bed, especially if it's warm out, it best to do that since there is no excess heat being applied to your hair cuticles. However, if air drying means you have to go to bed with wet hair, it's better to just blow dry [on low heat] to speed up drying. Not to mention the fungus that can grow if your scalp is still damp🤢

Thank you for continuing to give us the FACTS and DATA. YouTube and social media in general needs more scientists and less "influencers"

My hair just looks silly when i air dry.
But im too lazy to blow dry. I literally blow dry like .... a handful of times a year😂

I do use heat tools occasionally though.
Usually just a deep waver . It takes me like 5 mins to do maybe less.
Or if im feeling motivated or are doing something special ill curl. But it just goes wavy anyways

I have been air drying my hair for 33 years and it’s incredibly thick, long, luscious and almost down to my butt.

Hair wrap so that the light pressure dabs much of the water away, then finish with air dry (because who has the time to stand there with a dryer?)

I'm pretty sure it depends on where you live, how long and thick is your hair is. I live in east india where temp reaches nearly 50° during summer, rains for days simultaneously during monsoons and temp reaches nearly 5° and sometimes lesser than 0° in the mountain areas.

I have pretty much medium thickness of hair, so when my hair was short ie shoulder length and less

During summer only an hour would have been enough for my hair to air dry.
During monsoon 2 hours or so.
During winter more than 3 hrs indoors and outdoors under the sun, nearly 2 hours.

Now that i have nearly 3 ft long hair,

It took me 3 hours indoor during summers to dry my hair, i can't tell about outdoors because i didn't want to die because of sun just to dry my hair.

During monsoons, let's say more than 5 hours to air dry and still damp after that. Not to say my head hurt like crazy.

Now in winters, air drying IS OUT OF QUESTION!! I DON'T WANNA DIE, I ALREADY HAVE SINUSES and i catch cold extremely easily!
I tried ONCE!

i washed my hair around 2pm, the heat of the sun was already gone. Squeezed the water with towel as much as i could and left it to ait 7 hours! 7 FREAKING HOURS LATER AHD IT WAS STILL WET UNDERNEATH!
Then i slept wigh it completely open.
Woke up around 8-9 am and it was finally dry but still dull af! 🙂my head aas hurting like crazy, my nose was jammed. Ny migraine striked up, I had to take vapour and grenil.

After that i just decided to buy a hair dryer. My IT CHANGED MY LIFE! 😭
It takes me 20 minutes of so to dry my hair now if i'm just messily drying it without caring for frizz. It takes me nearly 1 hour to dry if i am blow drying it very carefully. I use heat protecting spray. And my hair is absolutely fabulous after!!

I do sleep on wet hair. Guess what. All the girls in school marveled at my curly hair. Soooo...
And mind you. That was before I did estrogen, so my hair was weaker back then.
