The UN released its State of World Population report today, and a new country is about to take the lead from China as the most populated one on the planet.

UN STATE OF WORLD POPULATION REPORT
Earth. It's where 8 billion of us live. Some of us live here, and some of us live there. But a huge number of us live in India! Yep, according to the UN's latest State of World Population report, it's on track to become the most populated country in the world! Which means China will fall to second place for the first time in 70 years. So how many people are we talking? Well, India's projected to have about 1,428,627,663 by July this year...woah...that's almost 3 million more people than China, with the US coming in third. But with great numbers of people comes great responsibility. Bigger populations mean more demand for resources like food and water, and it can put stress on things like employment, public transport, and having enough housing. So India has a lot of work ahead to make sure its cities can sustain all those people. But there are also some benefits. It'll make India a pretty powerful country to deal with, and a large, young workforce is expected to massively grow its economy. As for the rest of us, well, the UN says the world is the most populated it's ever been, which is mainly thanks to modern medicine and healthcare helping us live longer than ever before.

ECLIPSE
Tens of thousands of people watched the total solar eclipse from Exmouth in WA today. At about 11:30 am local time, the sun, moon, and Earth aligned. For about 60 seconds, the sun was completely blocked out, casting a shadow on these onlookers. The rest of the country was treated to a partial solar eclipse, although in some states, it was too cloudy to see anything.

CORROBOREE FROG
Have you ever heard this sound? That's the call of the northern corroboree frog or gyak, as it's known in the local Walgalu language. It's an endangered species, and students in New South Wales are learning all about it from Indigenous elders. Here in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, these students are learning about a very special little frog. This is the northern coroboree frog, also known as gyak in the local Walgalu language, and it's played a special part in the lives of First Nations people on the land for hundreds of years. But the coroboree frog is a critically endangered species with only about 300 males left in the wild. So local elders and scientists have joined with Taronga Zoo and Bangarra dance company to bring awareness to its struggles. They're working with the students to promote conservation and pass on its ancient stories through art and dance.

TASMANIA'S OLDEST SWIMMER
First up, to the oldest swimmer in Tasmania, taking part in this year's Masters Swimming Championships! Margaret is 93 years old, and she'll be versing other people in the 90 to 94 age category. She credits her family and her local swimming centre with helping her stay at the top of her game, and even now that she's given up driving, there's always someone to give her a lift to and from the pool.

OVER 80'S SOCCER
Now to Japan where an over 80s soccer league is kicking goals! This team of grandpas was started as a way to keep fit in their old age. Some of them have been playing soccer since they were in middle school! And even though taking a tumble does come with a bit more risk at this age, they say they're not giving up anytime soon.

SOCCER ROBOT
And finally, to the US, where robotics engineers are working on a soccer-playing robot. ARTEMIS can travel at a breakneck speed of 2.1 metres per second and can stay steady even when it's being kicked in the shins, shoved, or kicked in the back. Also, it looks like they're working on gigantic robotic spiders, but I've been told we don't need to worry about that.
