India is set to surpass China as having the world's largest population next year, according to figures released by the United Nations.

The two countries currently both have more than 1.4 billion people, but China's birth rate is slower.

The UN says by 2050, India will have 1.6 billion people, while China will have 1.3 billion.

The country with the largest population does not always mean a good thing because having more people will cause financial burden due to the unbalanced resource distribution.

The day giving birth is viewed as a choice rather than as a compulsion, this problem will be automatically solved. Society needs to stop criticising couples who are either infertile or chose not to have kids.

Too many people. This will only lead to more problems in an already crowded country.

India might be getting richer, but the money clearly isn’t trickling down, it’s people continue to be poor and the country continues to be dirty. It’s amazing China and India were basically equal at one point.

Hard to see how such an enormous population would be a good thing. Any small changes in things like climate or food supply and the situation could be catastrophic.

The world should try to reduce the population when most are poor. It is about quality of life.

With all the climate related disaster striking every corner of the earth, having huge population isn't going to much good.

A side issue can be clearly seen in many comments.
One of the worst attributes us Indians have is the inability to handle criticism, be it constructive or straight-up, no filter, harsh. As someone working in the US, and interacting with a lot of other nationalities (Chinese, Mexican, Nigerian, British etc.), I have noticed if you dish out some criticism to individuals from these places, they either admit it and show that they can improve, or they laugh it off. We, on the other hand, get butt-hurt and come out in full force to cancel, ridicule or show our stupid jingoism.

India has some of the best values and cultures, but I feel jingoism and zealotry (especially now!) is ruining things. We should get to work quietly and let results make the noise; be the critical tiger rather than the chest-thumping gorilla.

Well it doesn’t really matter. China’s economy is 5 times bigger and Chinese people are way more educated.

As an Indian i feel more population is big disadvantage for us..lots of struggle in each field...i think government should apply two child policy..!!

A very large population was never regarded as a good thing from the economy point of view until China's economic boom. The idea that any country with a large population like China's will experience similar economic growth is misleading. There's more to China's rise than its population. As for India, it has a much smaller land area compared to China, which means in relative terms it has always had more people than China. Rooting for India's growth against China's decline is more geopolitics than economic science.

I m from India and honestly speaking Population is a big disadvantage here…There is a very high population for limited seats in government institutions or college! According to me, 2 child policy should he implemented to increase our GDP per capita, which is very less!

just imagine if the government wanted to give everyone just £10 it would cost them 16 billion. Something seems wrong there.
