Why Foreigners Don't Trust Indians in India (Tourist Trap Scam)

Kerala's famous Chinese Fishing Nets are the site for a popular sympathy scam that's taking advantage of foreigners. The fishermen pretend to be friendly locals and invite you onto their fishing nets, only to ask you for a donation!

This is precisely why a lot of foreigners are worried about meeting Indians on the street in India. They've had too many bad experiences with scammers who they thought were friendly locals. Scammers in India see foreigners as walking ATMs that they can manipulate into giving a lot of money.

In some cases of this fishing net scam, the fisherman will take your photo and then not give your camera back until you pay them enough money. Many foreigners have been caught up by this scam.

It's a misconception that scams aren't taking place in South India. In most cases, local Indians have no idea these scams exist because they don't frequent their city's tourist attractions and aren't targeted by scammers.

I’ve been in India traveling now for 5 weeks. Every word you say in your videos is so true!!! Any time someone here talks to you they expect money. They follow you and talk to you if you like it or not and they ask for money. Sad to say I do not trust anyone being friendly to me as I know they are only making some conversation to get money. When out site seeing happens about 20 times a day. Love your channel and it has helped me navigate India. Thank you so much.
